English/Maths/Learning Support/Special Needs Teacher

I am passionate about the lives and education of children and adults and am looking to pursue an MA in Art Psychotherapy. But am currently looking to tutor for children, adults and EAL/ASD/SEN children.

Previous responsibilities included: Working with Maths and Literacy booster groups of 2-8 children at a time. Working 1:1 with children on Phonics and Turnabout programmes. Classroom Teaching Assistant for year 5. Working with children as part of the inclusion team. Some experience working with ASD children using Colourful Semantics,

Training: Safeguarding, First Aid, Numicon, Phonics, Turnabout.

For the last 6 months, I have been working as a Teacher in India as part of a scheme called Teach India which is run by the British Council. During my time in India I was expected to individually teach classes of up to 40 students in my chosen subjects; English, Reading, Art and Drama. The ability and age of my students ranged, working mainly with 5-17-year old’s. I chose to enroll on this programme because I believed it would challenge my previous experience and knowledge of working in the educational sector.

My previous job was as a Teaching Assistant in Islington, London. This gave me insight into working with children with special needs including autism and behavioral problems. Through working at the school, I developed good team relations with staff and built relationships with each child, gaining their trust and encouraging them to interact with others in a positive and friendly way. I found I can provide both a caring and orderly environment to enable learning, often in difficult situations. During this role, I gained vast knowledge and understanding of and commitment to implement the school’s curriculum strategies.

Prior to my role as Teaching Assistant, I was working at the Claremont Project Community Centre, London, which specialises in promoting mental wellbeing and art therapy for vunerable adults over the age of 55 through a diverse and enriching arts programme, for members of the community centre. I believe I also contributed by maintaining a naturally positive outgoing attitude, needed of my role. I carried out relevant admin functions, such as dealing with inquiries from members about the community centre, as well as organising events and teaching classes. I also had the opportunity to plan and hold my own photography and craft workshops for members at the community centre, which I found extremely enjoyable. By supporting and implementing an enriching arts health programme, I have seen firsthand the positive outcomes of creative community programmes. I have also been involved in helping to maintain Claremont’s procedures in relation to mental health, such as the Warwick Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale.

Numicon: I am fully trained in Numicon which is a multi-sensory approach to teaching maths developed by experts in the classroom. It is designed to help children understand connections between numbers in a visual and practical way.

Turanabout: I am also trained in Turnabout - The Turnabout Programme is for the ‘hard to move’ pupils, pupils with learning difficulties, behavioural problems and/or attention deficits. In three months most pupils make at least one year advance in measured Reading Age and Literacy/Numeracy National Curriculum levels - some make two and three year advances.
