About Viola
*Currently also taking on GCSE and A Level students* Please do not hesitate to send me a message for further information or availability enquiries.
I have been tutoring for over fifteen years and absolutely love it! Each student is unique and I work with them to understand their individual needs; leading to better academic results, but also to increased confidence and greater enjoyment of the subject.
My main subjects are Drama, Italian and English Literature & Language including creative writing, comprehension, essay writing skills, literary analysis and verbal expression. I have tutored students through A Level, AS, GCSE, entrance exams, 11+ and 13+ and have worked with a number of students for whom English is not a first language.
Being bilingual, I feel I really understand students brought up with more than one language. I have experience tutoring all subjects up to 13+ but keep to my speciality subjects for anything more advanced.
Continue reading (below) to find out a bit about my interests and who I am. There is also a link to a short video in which I introduce myself and feel free to contact me if you would like to ask any questions or for further information. If the available hours on my profile do not suit your required times please do get in touch anyway as they are often just an indication of my availability.
Acting: I am a professional actress. Having enjoyed the wonderful rep-like benefits of Student Theatre in Durham (where I acted in up to four plays a term) I then trained at Drama Studio London. I have theatre and film experience and have toured the UK, Italy and Greece with productions including Pride and Prejudice, Chekhov Shorts and Private Lives. Shakespeare is a passion of mine, both on the page and on the stage.
Languages: I am half Italian and fully bi-lingual and bi-cultural. I speak a good level of conversational French and basic Spanish. Having grown up in a bi-lingual household and lived half of my childhood in Italy I understand the great benefits, but also the challenges, that bi-lingual children can face and have spent a great deal of time working with children for whom English is a second (or third or fourth) language. I have worked as an interpreter, translator and ethnographer (Italian/English).
Sports: I enjoy horse-riding and most mountain activities, especially hiking (spent half my childhood in the Italian Alps). I can ice-skate and at Durham I played football for my college; Castle. Rugby is my watching sport of choice.
Other interests: Coming from a family of writers and artists it seems only fitting that I should have a great passion for both literature and art. I love to bury myself in books and, having been mercilessly dragged round art galleries as a child, I now take myself and my children to art galleries and exhibitions as a regular treat. Although I do write, my artistic ability is currently limited to photography. I am also very interested in History with a particular fascination for WW2 espionage, the Renaissance and the Reformation. I have traveled extensively and love exploring.
I currently live in Hackney, London with my English Teacher husband, two small children and our dog.

Each student is different, and the joy of tutoring (as opposed to class or group teaching) is that I can adapt my lesson and teaching style to suit individual needs, as I have done with hundreds of students over the last ten years. I will start by gauging what my student feels they need help with and what they see as their strengths and weaknesses, whilst also making my own assessment. Then, together, we can come up with a plan.
The most vital element of a successful tutoring partnership is that we get on and are able to not only work together, but also develop a strong bond of trust. Finding the right tutor for you or your child is crucial for success.

- Viola's response :Adrian is a joy. Attentive and hard working. I am glad to see he is already seeming more confident in his story telling and happy to write longer answers to comprehensions.

Perfect! Extremely knowledgeable and supportive tutor
My daughter Julia was absolutely delighted with the support she got from Viola to help prepare her for her GCSE’s. It has been a very strange year for students and Viola was of great support to ensure that Julia felt as prepared as possible to approach the unusual and intense exam period. Not only is Viola exceptionally knowledgeable, but she has a lovely approachable manner and has been very flexible to work around our busy schedule and even support out of the agreed lessons with last minute queries if needed. We could not recommend her enough and feel very confident that Julia will do well as a result of her tutoring.

Viola was just the best for my daughter who is in year 11. She gave her the confidence to really work at the subject. My daughter had about 4 different teachers and was very confused. Viola gave her the confidence to be relaxed jn the exams and do her best. I would totally recommend her.

Viola is a very good tutor. She makes learning english really fun. She is very interesting and explains things really well. I highly recommend her.
My daughter struggled a lot getting
to grips with her A-Level English
Language, and within just a few
weeks Viola had massively
increased her confidence and
knowledge. Viola is a friendly and lovely tutor, and we wish her every
success in the future.Viola is an excellent tutor, knowledgeable and very patient.
I would absolutely recommend her.Viola is an outstanding teacher, she has taught my daughter so many wonderful things, such as how to write different kinds of essays, beautiful stories and many other things. I 100% recommend her to everyone because she can teach you a lot in just a few lessons.
Viola taught my daughter GCSE English, both language and literature (she also was her Italian tutor!). She worked really well with my daughter who is very dyslexic and finds English almost impossible, with the utmost patience. Viola turned someone who was incapable of writing an essay and found English comprehension really hard into an A grade student. The fact that my daughter managed a C at her literature is thanks to Viola's perseverance. She also really, really helped with Italian, particularly with the oral exam. My daughters Italian teacher at school said he was very pleasantly surprised by the enormous improvement he saw in the time Viola was helping. We really feel our daughter achieved her maximum potential with Viola's help.
Viola came to help my son (8 years old) improve his level and confidence in writing as he was not 'producing enough' according to his school teacher. After only three lessons, I noticed he was already applying some of Viola's advice, in terms of better and longer sentences. I know miracles don't happen overnight, particularly in English writing, but I like to think that Viola has started a small thinking/writing revolution in my son's head.
Viola has a very gentle approach and lots of patience.Viola was absolutely fantastic in every respect. She took my son to new levels in his comprehension and story writing, was so genuine, kind supportive and very focused on the end game. She worked innovatively and went the extra mile to make sure he was well prepared for his exams. He got into a top London day school which was his first choice so we couldn't be more pleased.
Viola is, without a doubt, the most wonderful tutor I have ever worked with. She is able to quickly identify weaknesses and improve them effectively so that every session feels rewarding. In just two months she took me from a B prediction to and A* for my Italian A-level. The summer after my exam, I did an internship in Italy, speaking only Italian at work. Without her none of this would have been possible.
Most of all I am thankful to her for creating such a safe space, where I felt no embarrassment when making mistakes. She made it easy for me to throw myself into the subject matter and push myself beyond my highest hopes.
Not only is she a wonderful tutor, she is a great mentor who was always warm and enthusiastic about our sessions and our work.
I cannot recommend her enough, she everything a great teacher should be.Viola really picked up my confidence at a time when I gave up with English. She helped me build the skills that I struggled with for the course of my GCSE'S. Viola is easy going and always there if you need help, even outside tutoring hours. I owe a massive thanks to her and all her patience.
Viola has worked as a tutor and English teacher with our family for four consecutive years. She is a brilliant English teacher and tutor in general. My oldest son David now aged 18 (12 when Viola first stayed with us in Umbria) is currently studying History and Politics at Soas after attending Italian school throughout his high school years and her teaching and coaching were key factors to his successful application and high standard of written and spoken English. My youngest son and daughter both aged sixteen also studied with Viola who was in charge of all three during the summer months when the rest of the family was working in Rome, and have both been accepted at highly selective St Stephen's International School in Rome. Viola was able to look after three kids, organize their daily schedule of study, free time and entertainment as well as cultural trips to churches and museums from Assisi to Perugia. She is a talented responsible expert tutor with a lovely personality and we cannot praise her highly enough for the invaluable help she has been to our family and to my children's academic career.
