About Vincent
Mathematics tuition offered to students studying for GCSE, GCE "A" level and equivalent examinations. I also tutor junior school pupils who are having difficulties with the subject.
I hold an MA in Mathematics/Philosophy and a PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate of Education) from Oxford University.
I have many years' experience of teaching and tutoring in mathematics. I use only my own materials (unless the student has specific worksheets that he or she wants to go through).
I do most tutoring by Skype. I use interactive boards, on which both the tutor and the student can write. Anything that can be written or drawn on paper can also be written or drawn on the boards - often better than on paper. The student can save all the boards, but I always e-mail them at the end of each lesson, so the student has a permanent record of everything done.
My approach to tutoring is to make sure the learning is "active". The tutor must of course explain things that the student does not know or does not understand well. But thereafter the student should be solving problems, whose level of difficulty s set according to the student's answers to previous similar problems.
It is important to get sufficient practice on any given topic before moving on. In fact "overlearning" - continuing to practise after one seems to understand well - gives rise to long term memorisation. Purely listening to the tutor or teacher gives rise to "passive" learning.
If you want to drive a car, you must practise driving yourself. Watching someone else drive will not make you a competent driver. Of course you must be told how to drive before you start.
As soon as a student starts to solve problems correctly, he or she starts to gain in confidence, Then if careless errors can be eliminated, there is no reason why top grades should not be obtained.
