About Victoria

My name is Vicky and I specialise in the 9-11 age group as they prepare for the important transition from primary to secondary school. This includes English, maths, verbal & non-verbal reasoning. I also support students to write academically throughout secondary school and into further/higher education.

I have been teaching for a grand total of 26 years, including 6 years as a private tutor. I have successfully guided students in attaining offers from high ranking schools including St.Paul's Girls, Westminster, Alleyn’s and St.Olave’s Grammar School in Kent.

My strengths are in preparing children to sit private school entrance tests. These often require full written answers - there is a strong emphasis on explaining your answer with evidence from the text and analysing the author’s word choice. For the purpose of online tuition, I have adapted reading comprehension tests for many private schools. Rather than just reading from a mark scheme (often there isn’t one), I complete all reading comprehensions myself beforehand in order that I can provide in-depth advice and show students ‘what a good answer looks like’ (WAGALL).

Creative writing is a requirement for many schools, and can be a source of anxiety for some learners if they have not been adequately prepared. With guided practice and expert feedback, I can help learners harness their creativity and turn it into something extraordinary.

My experience is supported by a range of relevant qualifications. As well as a Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics, I have a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education, an ESOL Diploma and a Certificate in Dyslexia Support. I have worked at a range of institutions including the British Council in Thailand, Chiang Mai University, and 11 years at a busy London college supporting students in English & Maths up to GCSE level. Often the students had complicated learning histories. By means of additional in-college tutoring, I was able to enhance their performance and confidence; many went on to achieve pass grades where previously they had failed.

Initially, I tutored students in their homes as an adjunct to my main job. At the onset of covid, I packed in the day job and dedicated myself entirely to online tutoring. Although out of necessity at first, I soon discovered a much richer learning experience than the traditional face-to-face model. I have become adept in the use of digital annotation tools, digital flashcards and enjoy instant access to definitions, images, example sentences and more. It also provides a far more efficient way to set targets and track progress. If you are unsure whether online tuition is for you, you may wish to read my article which compares online with face-to-face tuition (see 'Resources' below).

As much as knowledge, I aim to instill an approach to learning that will benefit learners beyond the direct tutoring that they receive. I frequently set research tasks for homework and we discuss study techniques such as note-taking and information recall.

Prior to the first lesson, I like to meet briefly online in order to check the technology and readiness for learning. It is also an opportunity to meet the parents and ask any questions. It is important to get these things right from the start in order to ensure a smooth learning journey.
