About Victoria

Hello! My name is Victoria, and I am eager to help! I have a first class honors degree in MUSIC and PHYSICS! (Yes, I have two bachelor's degrees!) I am currently doing my PhD in Particle Physics at the University of Edinburgh where work on the ATLAS collaboration at CERN while privately teaching voice and music theory in my off hours. I have lots of experience in computer science, mathematics, physics, music theory, voice, composition, choral performance, and piano, and I have an overall enthusiasm for teaching and problem solving!

//
EDUCATION:

Here's a little bit about my educational background:
I grew up in New York and went to a public school in New York. After I graduated high school
I graduated Cum Laude from Mount Holyoke College with an Honors Bachelors in Physics and a Honors Bachelors in Music.
I am a PhD student in particle physics at the University of Edinburgh under the ERC grant to study long lived particles on the ATLAS experiment.
Now, I am working with a team of scientists to discover the fundamental truths of our universe, a dream job!

MUSIC BACKGROUND:
I began training classically in piano since I was nine years old.
At 12, I began classical vocal training. In New York State, I have been awarded Highest Level of performance by the age of 13 in piano, and 15 in voice.
I then went on to Mount Holyoke College to get a degree in vocal performance and composition, where I earned an Honors in Music.

//
SKILL SET:

Here's a little bit about my skill set I developed along the way:
PHYSICS:
I am extremely proficient in problem solving. In my undergrad, I was encouraged to use a Seven Step Framework to solve problems (of which I will teach you!). This framework not only helped me solve physics problems, but it's pedagogically proven that very organized and successful people like CEOs, lawyers, and researchers, all use a similar method for solving problems. It is extremely effective, and is a framework I still use today if I get really stuck on a problem.
I also have a background in mathematics ranging from basic algebra, to mathematical methods in physics and differential equations. As being an experimental physicist, I have expertise in Python, C/C++, basic bash, and machine learning.

MUSIC:
I have a comprehensive background in music theory, piano, individual and SATB/SSAA vocal performance. I have been a vocal coach for two years with success in people feeling more comfortable with their voice, extending their range, training their ear, and learning music. My vocal background ranges from Baroque to Modern and even pop.

//
EXPERIENCE:

PHYSICS;
Here's a little information about my experience as a tutor:
Mount Holyoke College is a traditional women's college. I applied to be a tutor for electromagnetism and mathematical methods in physics for the final two years of my undergrad, where I held both private, one-to-one tutoring, and class TA sessions.
As a PhD student, I have been a TA for undergraduate electromagnetism, and thermodynamics.

MUSIC:
I have been a vocal coach for two years, but also am able to teach beginner piano.

// PEDAGOGY:

PHYSICS:
Finally, I want to provide you a little information on how I teach. I have a profound knowledge of pedagogy of teaching young women and other marginalized people in science and math. Being a tutor and TA at a traditional women's college, I had to undergo rigorous training on how to teach problem solving to a group of students who were not always supported in the same way the majority of their fields were. After these sessions, I was encouraged by the success these methods had in how to approach answering a student's question, and how to teach appropriate problem solving skills. The sessions taught me that minorities in science and maths typically begin those subjects already with a "fixed" mindset. This means that you already believe you don't have the aptitude for learning this type of material.

This really resonated with me, because for my entire educational experience, I struggled more than the men in my class simply because I did not feel like I was smart enough to be there. This reflected in my performance on exams, although it did not reflect in my class participation or homework assignments. I have had an ongoing struggle with taking exams in math and science because I already felt like I failed before I began.

However, finally learning about how women and minorities learn changed how I learned myself, and more importantly, gave me the confidence to be a better test taker. I now have confidence in taking exams and have developed an individualized tool kit for me to use when I'm taking exams. If you relate to my story, I want you to know that you are capable of being confident and you are able to grow if you have the right direction. I want to help you develop your skills by tailoring a tutoring program that's right for you and you will always be taught with the most up to date pedagogical approach in teaching "fixed minded" students.

I strongly believe that studying physics and math at any level is an opportunity to strengthen your critical reasoning and problem solving skills, and building confidence more than it is just knowing the answer, though I am sure with these skills mastered, the material should seem like less of an overbearing challenge. I hope that when we work together, we spend time developing areas of weakness, and leveraging your strengths to your advantage. Sciences and maths can often feel discouraging, but once we get you on the right track with a strong skillset, you will see how wonderfully satisfying problem solving is.

MUSIC:
I believe music is the purest form of expression and should be taught and appreciated at all levels. I am not one of those music teachers that believes only the "talented" can be musicians, because that is approaching the subject with a fixed mindset. Instead, I encourage everyone who wants to better their music skills to do so, encouraging a growth mindset.

It is my belief that whether it's learning how to match a pitch, to compiling and reciting an hour long repertoire, each student should be equally regarded and attended to. I will make sure that special attention is given to any student at any level, and I will curate a specialized plan to help you achieve your goals.

I usually begin sessions by assessing my student's current levels, spot areas of improvement, areas of strength, and make lessons plans from then on, assessing the progress each time we meet. I hope I can help you discover the joys of learning music!

Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any further questions!
