Professional Creative Writing Tutor, BA, PGCE, MA, PhD

Hi, my name is Tom McKay and I have taught creative writing at University level for twelve years. I lectured for three years at Bucks New University in scriptwriting, prose fiction, lifewriting and poetry. For the last nine years I have worked for The Open University and while this keeps me busy; I'm always interested in extra work tutoring the subject I love - especially during the summer months. I am very happy to proofread, correct and offer 'detailed' professional and academic advice on any work you'd care to send me. I can work completely online; while offering additional support by telephone / Skype. If you live in London I am happy to come and meet you face to face if required.

At The Open University I currently teach:

A215 Creative Writing
A363 Advanced Creative Writing
A802 MA Creative Writing

I have a degree in creative writing from the University of Washington State. A PGCE from the London Institute of Education, a Masters in creative writing from the famous course at UEA - and a Doctorate from The Open University in London.

I regularly publish short stories and poetry. And I co-founded and run a famous literary performance night in London which is held monthly just off Oxford Street called The Liars' League. Find us here: www.liarsleague.com

A more in-depth CV is available on request. Find me on Linkedin too - where you can see plenty of endorsements.

Tom was my tutor for two years on the Open University’s BA in Creative Writing.

As a teacher, I found Tom quite inspiring.

His interest in my work and careful guidance always made me want to produce my best. A meticulous marker he provided the right balance that a creative writer needs – one between focus and flying high. He’s the kind of teacher, who tunes into your particular abilities and makes you s-t-r-e-t-c-h them to their very best outcome. Which is what happened and why I am now going to apply for a Masters in the subject

Tom was my tutor when I studied creative writing at the Open University. He was supportive and encouraging whilst offering careful and constructive criticism and advice – which I really valued. The confidence and skills I gained from working with Tom were so helpful when I went on to complete my Masters in Creative Writing at Goldsmiths University. Since then I’ve gone on to be published in digital and print, and have also founded an award winning literary magazine. Thanks Tom!

A-Class Tertiary Tutor

I studied creative writing at the Open University UK and Tom was my tutor for the duration of the eight-month, level 2 module. The nature of study at the Open University is that most of the support is carried out remotely and I found Tom’s online guidance and feedback invaluable. Our day school saw Tom go above and beyond the use of the basic study materials required for the course and his knowledge of literature is remarkable. Tom’s own passion for his subject, as well as his useful, constructive feedback proved a great inspiration to me and I would recommend him unreservedly to anybody seeking to improve their skills and knowledge within the field of English literature and creative writing and my module result is a reflection of this.

overall examinable score 71; overall continuous assessment score 81

I had nearly given up on education- finding the education I had so far received to be impersonal and therefore impenetrable to anyone wanting to grow their individuality through and within their writing. I then joined the Open University and was taught by Tom. Tom teaches with a genius balance of discipline and meticulous observation but also care and familiarity - he obviously goes to great pains to understand the work and also the person behind it, creating fantastic writers all growing and grown subject to their own talents and paths in life. Tom restored my confidence in my own writing and my marks improved dramatically from my previous university course at Goldsmiths. I stretched and understood myself as a writer and still recall his advice and comments whilst writing.
Subject:
Creative Writing
Outcome:
During the course my marks went from 3rd/2.2's - 2.1/1'st extremely quickly. I am now published in a wide field of writing and have the confidence and motivation to write often.

Best tutor!

Tom was an amazing tutor, and his explanations were always so clear. Although I'm sure he had other commitments apart from the OU, he was always willing to give up his time to help me. He really went above and beyond.
