About Tom
I have a First Class BA in German Language and Literature from the University of Oxford and an MPhil in Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic literature from the University of Cambridge, but am enthusiastic and passionate about literature and language of all kinds - especially German and English.
I have more than 1,600 hours of tutoring experience, including both within and outside the this site system, and have worked in partnership with Canis Major as well as with Oxford Talent to teach English as a foreign language. As well as offering tutorials, I am happy to mark essays at GCSE, A Level, and undergraduate level. My excellent educational credentials make me among the top qualified tutors in the UK.

I have always enjoyed sharing my new-found knowledge with younger students or even peers, whether that be through mentoring Year 7s or serving as a language prefect whilst still at school, delivering presentations at university, or giving ongoing teaching assistance at my old school in German, French, and English. I was lucky to have good teachers in these subjects at school, and indeed in the former at university, and I'm passionate about using my abilities to pass on what I most love about these subjects.
One thing all my years studying has taught me is that the most important thing for any given student's lesson is that their teacher understands how they learn. This is particularly the case with private tuition, where the individual needs of each student are paramount. No student is the same; therefore no lesson should be the same. It is my goal to work with parents and students to craft specifically tailored tuition depending on each individual.

Perfect! Tom was an amazing tutor !!! He moved my son from a 4 in English Language and a 5 in English Literature to high 7s in just a few months.
Perfect! Excellent German Tutor!
Look no further - Tom is an excellent German tutor! I retained Tom for my son’s iGCSE exams for Summer 2020 and have deferred to the Autumn sitting. I have every confidence that with Tom’s support from June (after assessments/mocks submitted for remaining subjects), my son shall receive top grade in German (and manage studies comfortably alongside start of his A Levels).
Tom is punctual, polite, positive and a perfect role model for my son to achieve his best. Bravo Tom!

Tom has been an excellent tutor in the run up to my daughter's A levels. She is a capable student but was lacking in confidence in some areas of English Lit, and Tom really helped her with that. Tom has been very quick to reply to messages, and efficient and helpful in arranging online sessions. He was recommended to me by my sister and I would wholeheartedly recommend him to others.

Thank you so much for all your work with Emily. Your highly organised approach to lessons and enthusiasm really boosted her confidence and she benefited massively from your help throughout her Alevel course. I have no doubt she will achieve a good grade in August, but the main thing is that you taught her what she needed to do to achieve and as a result she was so much happier working for her A level. Many thanks!

Tom taught me beginner level German for a year. He is really great in teaching and has lots of resources to help through key concepts and is always available to help. Would highly recommend!
Tom tutored my son at German GCSE for 6 months. In that time his predicted grade moved from 3 to 7 He picked Ben’s confidence off of the floor and by the end of the programme he’d been moved from intermediate to advanced level paper.
I met Tom in Cambridge on summer in 2019, he was our tour guide in that time, and we developed a very close relationship. So when backing China, I feel I really need someone to help with my TOEFL english test,.Therefore, I came to Tom, he taught me writing section first, I practiced real TOEFL writing problems, and we discuss some of the grammar errors in each lesson, you know, some of the errors that you may never find out by yourself, thank god, finally someone came out, that man is Tom. Plus, we talked about how to speak like a native english people, which we practiced a lot, that really helps!
Tom can explain english literature very well. He has a very personalised approach to tutoring as he regularly puts you in the drivers seat. He would always ask “what do you want to do” and this allows me to focus on what I struggle on. He is great at listening to your own ideas, without controlling them (helpful for exams where you need to create an argument yourself). Yet he still helps you develop your own argument into a more complex and intuitive one, devising different ways in which you could think about a question or theme. From issues such as creating an argument, to issues with grammar and clarity, Tom is a very good tutor as he explains the reasoning behind why grammar doesn’t make sense. He challenges you on some of the arguments you make and takes you through the process of formulating this argument (the essential part of english literature A Level). Something which jumped out to me about Tom was that he was willing to do work outside the classroom for you. For me, this was to help find critics quotes and to even mark some of my essays. Tom puts his all in to tutoring and brought me from a D grade (end of year 12 in June) to an A grade (Year 13 Mocks in January)
Tom helped me study for my IB english higher level exams. He was clear and direct about the approach I needed to take and we had some really interesting discussions about poetry.
Tom is a wonderful teacher. He is able to react to the tutorees' individual levels of competence with supreme agility, coming up with very clear corrections that also contain strategies for avoiding mistakes. Each tutorial is well prepared and composed, combining repetition, extension and specific contents of interest to the student. Highly intelligent, most sympathetic. Absolutely to be recommended.
Tom is a very friendly tutor who is happy to work around an unpredictable schedule.
I had great fun developing my speaking skills through informal conversations via Skype, and Tom was also happy to mark & discuss written work.I am glad to have found Tom as a tutor. I had lessons for three quarters of a year and due to his commitment and expertise I was able to improve my English skills significantly. It always was a very casual but productive atmosphere and which ever question I ask he was prepared to answer right away. Tom has a very deep understanding of languages and is gifted with the ability to pass on his enthusiasm and knowledge.
In addition he provided me with a lot of very help full materials/website addresses so that I could learn beyond our regular lessons.
Tom is a great character, I can honestly say I enjoyed every lesson and with no doubt I would recommend him as a tutor.
Thanks for everything!Tom has been really helpful with tutoring me not only for my a level French but also general studies. He caters the sessions well to my needs and constantly checks in to see if There’s anything that we need to focus more or less on.
Excellent tutor, with firm understanding of course requirements and what students need to maximise their marks. Tom provided a series of well-structured and clear revision sessions, with helpful resources, many of which were adapted specifically for my daughter. Friendly and very encouraging, he has really boosted her confidence and made her feel ready for the exams. Would highly recommend.
I personally find Tom to be a very useful and understanding tutor. He not only guides me skillfully though my set texts but also helps improve my overall understanding of literature as subject. He boosts my confidence massively and would highly recommend him to any seeking literature help.
Tom is really enthusiastic and not at all patronising! He is a brilliant proof-reader and understands what is required in different essay styles. Tom can articulate well and explains theories and structures in different ways, adapting his own approach so that the content becomes accessible to anyone.
I assume German is what Tom will be teaching, though there are a few other things he could teach as well.
Suffice it to say that I recommend Tom unreservedly. He is highly intelligent and knowledgeable, and would I am sure make an excellent tutor. He will be reliable and inspiring - there is really no need to say more.I have known Tom for seven years. He has shown himself to be one of the most academically gifted people I have ever met, and is easily able to transfer this enthusiasm and competence to his pupils.
Tom is not only an extremely capable teacher, but can work with pupils of varying abilities, tailoring lessons to their specific needs to ensure they achieve the very best of their abilities.Tom is engaging, friendly, capable and extremely bright - I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him as a tutor
Tom is an excellent tutor. He is very patient and understanding, and has a very thorough knowledge of his subjects. He can give students the skills they need to reach their goals.
