About Thomas
A dynamic, enthusiastic and highly motivated graduate geophysicist with qualified teacher status as a physicist for learners of ages 11 to 18 within both the independent and state sectors. I am proactively looking to broaden and compliment my 5 years of teaching and private tutoring experience by utilising my multi-disciplinary working and academic background as well as apply my breadth of knowledge and boundless energy towards new and exciting opportunities at this site. I am highly passionate, analytical and able to efficiently and effectively assimilate complex forms of data, with a professional record that consistently attests to my ability to comfortably communicate the complexities of today's ever-changing curriculum across disciplines, to audiences of different cultures, nationalities and levels of understanding.
Core Teaching Values:
- Learning IS a fun and rewarding process, no matter what kind of learner you are!
- Access to Learning is never impossible, the possibilities of learning are never inaccessible.
- Learning to keep it simple is the key to unlocking the complexities of higher understanding.
- Progress of the individual can go unregonised in the mire of the modern classroom, therefore I make the individual the focus of recognition and thus progress will always be recognised.
During the 5 years I have taught Physics and Science within the classroom and privately, these core values have held true throughout. I am proud to say that I have consistently produced exceptional value-added scores for my classes and have a 100% pass rate in Physics for the students I have taught at GCSE and A-Level. This record stretches across a number of examination boards as well as from state to independent sectors. I have been able to enjoy working with pioneering educational nurture projects focusing on SEN in London, the engagement of BSED students transferred from Pru's as well as mentored and re-introducing school refusers to science outside of school. Additionally I have had the Privilage of working across the South East with the very most gifted academic and sporting students from a number of excellent state and independent schools on my journey to becoming a qualified teacher of Physics.
Professional skill set:
- Acted as a Geoscience specialist, graduate educational consultant to small and emerging energy companies. The primary focus of which was on graduate recruitment strategy and development with a secondary foci on a spectrum of other industry-specific areas related to educational outreach and promoting the natural resource industry to children in education. A key component of this was running summer science workshops that outlined the importance of (traditionally drier!) topics such as GIS, directional surveying and CRS mapping in enhancing our understanding of science as traditionally conceived but also of its accessibility through all avenues of interest; a concept which has formed the foundation of teaching ethos and the successes therein.
- I have thorough experience of the pedagogical approaches towards learning accessibility. I have acted as an advisory on modernising and exciting the teaching and learning practices within the institutions that I have worked.
- I am a keen extra-curricular enthusiast and have consistently coached/managed numerous extra curricular societies from Astronomy to Chess to Manga to Football (as well as taken part in a number of these myself when I was a student!)
- I have consistently worked on a one-to-one, 'mentor', basis with certain students during my time in education and have used these times as a model for my private tuition slots with clients across the capital and further afield. Meticulous planning and a broad understanding of individual learning needs, coupled with my core teaching values mean that each tutee receives the catered approach to learning that suits them with a guarantee of progress and enjoyment which they may never have thought they were capable of!
