About Thomas
Hi! I recently graduated from an MSci Pharmacology degree at University College London and have decided to start tutoring to fund myself until I start a PhD and to pass on everything I have learned to others.
Although I have not previously done paid tutoring work, I have volunteered as a tutor for students struggling to reach C or above grades at GCSE in schools across London during my degree and in this time have helped numerous students to achieve their full potential. In addition, I held the position of Student Academic Representative throughout my studies and in my final year worked as a Transition Mentor for first year students. Through these experiences I learned a great deal about how to create an optimal learning experience for students and how to support them in their academic work and the pressures it can bring.
I believe that some of the most important things that make me a great tutor are my commitment to developing understanding rather than simply memorising facts and my ability to foster a warm and relaxed atmosphere whilst retaining a focus on learning. Discussion plays a key role in my sessions as I believe this is key to building confidence and comprehension of material and I am always keen to spot weaknesses and work on them. At the same time, I also know that with the right strategies one can soak up a great deal of information in a short space of time and can adapt my approach to suit each individual's needs.
I believe that with the right help, any student can achieve a high grade in science and maths regardless of their initial levels of ability. I am committed to finding the methods that suit each student the best and helping them to achieve their goals.
When studying my degree I learned firsthand the degree to which stress can affect one's studies. Students now face more pressure to perform well academically than ever, and this pressure or stress from other facets of life can easily be counterproductive. I am more than happy to share everything I have learned about how to manage and cope with stress with any student who needs it.
Finally, after four years of studying at a world-class university I know what makes a strong applicant and a high-performing student in higher education. I will gladly help with personal statements and preparation for university, especially for science-based subjects.
In addition to pharmacology and neuroscience, my other passions are languages and music. I have attempted to learn a number of languages in my time but am currently focussing on improving my Portuguese. Musically, I have played the bass guitar for 8 years and achieved Grade 8 before starting university. I have dabbled with other instruments, but above all I love writing and composing new music.
Thanks for reading - if you have any questions or would like to book a session with me, please don't hesitate to send a message!

I did my undergraduate studies at UCL alongside Tom and shared many of the same classes. Come exam time we would often study together and I found myself turning to him repeatedly when I had difficulties understanding certain topics or needed help structuring answers when writing example essays. Tom's explanations were always very thorough and he was able to break down difficult concepts into easily digestible pieces. He was also always very patient and this went a long way in increasing my confidence when it came to sitting for exams.
