About Thomas
I love that 'Aha' moment when students realise what a poem or a play is about. I love helping them to find their own interpretations, while also guiding them in what exam boards expect. Over the years, I have helped students improve their scores in the 11+ exam and English Literature and I will do the same for you.
I am a graduate from London Film School, where I gained an MA in Screenwriting. I also hold a BA (Hons) in English and American Literature from the University of Warwick and have had a career in publishing, journalism and higher education.
I have experience tutoring KS2 English, GCSE English Language and Literature, and A-Level Film Studies. As a graduate of London Film School, I am also experienced in creative writing, in particular screenwriting and playwriting.
During my university degree I spent one year studying Japanese at the University of Tokyo, where I worked as an English language tutor part-time. As such I have experience in teaching conversational English to non-native speakers.
I also have 4 years experience working as a Resident Adviser for Boston University's Study Abroad program in London. This is a pastoral role, where I act as a first point of contact for undergraduate students with concerns.
Creative writing students:
I have had three short plays staged in London, including one at the prestigious Theatre503. I have also written and directed a short film called Wode which is currently being submitted to film festivals. At the moment, I am writing a TV pilot, a full-length play, and co-writing a feature film.
Over the years, I have run several 5-week script writing workshops with university students through my previous job with Boston University in London, so I have experience tutoring students with little to no background in creative writing. I find tutoring in creative writing incredibly enjoyable, so I promise you I will enjoy it as much as you do.
My goal as a tutor will be to help bring out your creative vision and to guide you as you develop your idea for whatever form you choose (e.g. writing a play). I will seldom if ever tell you what to write; that's the job of an editor or 'script doctor'. Instead, I will mostly ask questions and help guide your thinking. I may also point out weaknesses or potential problems with your writing and help you find solutions. The key point is that my primary job is help you develop as a writer so that you can write without the aid of a tutor.

Tom has always been punctual, reliable, and is very knowledgeable about the subject. he is extremely delicated and works wonderfully with my son. I am sure his lesson is enjoyable, and my son had made great progress.
Tom is a very professional, charismatic individual who has the ability to connect well with all personalities. He makes you feel at ease with his quirky sense of humour and his thoughtfulness.
He was a very popular work colleague with a high work ethic and illustrated great knowledge and passion for English literature and film.
A joy to be around.Tom was a valued member of our editorial staff for a number of years, where he diligently produced breaking news, analysis and features, often to a tight, rolling deadline. Through is written and audio-visual reporting, Tom was able to explain complex political, economic and social issues to a young online audience. He showed great professionalism and responsibility when handling difficult or ethically sensitive stories and demonstrated his personable character when meeting sources and interviewees. He was popular with his colleagues, who appreciated his willingness to step up when time and resources were limited and were glad of the knowledge and guidance he could offer new members of the team unfamiliar with our content management system and the current affairs he had followed closely. I have no doubt Tom would make a patient and hardworking tutor.
