About Thamina
I am a reliable, conscientious and dedicated individual who enjoys working with children. I am able to work collaboratively as part of a team as well as independently, adopting a creative approach to planning, teaching and learning. I understand the importance of child protection and safeguarding of children. I am familiar with the National Curriculum for KS1/KS2. Indeed, over the past ten years I have developed sound core and foundation subject knowledge.
My experience is broad, working with children from diverse backgrounds and a range of abilities. I have also worked with SEN and EAL children in small groups and one to one allowing me to tailor teaching and learning methods specifically to their needs. I have had developed and implemented IEP’s (individual educational plans) and then assessed and measured pupil progress.
Through my role as an Intervention Teacher (KS1/KS2) I have been able to develop my one-to-one tutoring skills and gain a better understanding of how best to motivate and encourage children to enjoy learning. Throughout my teaching career I have been delivering private tutoring, in English and Maths as a way of helping those children who really progress with one to one teaching methodologies. It is important to motivate children by making learning fun and stimulating.
To work with families, parents and carers to encourage positive engagement with the school is something that has been an integral part of my experience working as a class teacher. Informing parents and carers of children’s learning and extra-curricular activities not only gets parents involved in children’s learning, progress and achievement, it helps them feel part of the school. In Al-falah Primary school, I was responsible for introducing and implementing the ‘Interactive Diary,’ which is used to communicate at a minimum once a week with parents on preferably a positive aspect of the child’s progress in school. Teachers were briefed to use the smiley/sad face to compliment comments written to help parents understand, for whom English is not their first language.
My experience as Art and Design Co-ordinator allowed me to deliver teacher training (INSETS) on various topics; the basic techniques of art at Primary level, moving monsters and recycling and reusing material. Further to this, I have recently delivered training on physical education, encouraging teachers to make use of a range of entertaining games using minimum resources. These creative strategies can be utilised to make learing fun for SEN children and furthermore broaden the potential methodlogies that can be used to meet their teaching and learning needs.
I have had experience of providing tailored parent support through targeted activities and family work, for example, there have been English as an additional language (EAL) children or potential Special educational needs (SEN) children who needed to be assessed and referred. I arranged for the local SENCO to come in and assess the child concerned and then arranged a follow up meeting with the parents. The feedback session helped to produce a set of action points and, more importantly, how the parents could support their child at home. This included modelling a series of simple activities to help the child to improve memory skills and to build on handwriting skills. Regular meetings allowed the school to track progress at home and adjust the IEP (individual education plan) accordingly.
As an educationalist, I understand the importance of keeping up to date with latest government and community initiatives which enhance educational opportunities to improve children’s learning. As a class teacher, I have provided parents with regular briefings on topics that would be covered each term. I gave parents ideas on how to support and consolidate their child’s learning at home. For example, in Numeracy ‘recognising and working with money’, parents were encouraged to play shopping games using real coins at home. Parents were also given guidance on how to listen to their child’s reading and then use a tick box system to record feedback. I also worked collaboratively with other teachers to put together simple and effective educational websites that parents could use at home with their child. I used all opportunities provided by the school to engage with parents, for example parents days/evenings and suggested (after consulting with senior management) suitable extra-curricular activities suitable for the age range I was teaching. This included sports clubs, swimming lessons, scouts groups, and play schemes run on the weekends.
I look forward to hearing from you in the future.
