  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I started tutoring a friend of mine who was studying AAT (Accounting) and I remember having to translate from english to French and vice versa, as well as helping them with the subject knowledge. I enjoyed explaining the various concepts, followed by the practise questions and seeing how my friend completed the questions independently.

The tutoring experience as well as her calling me to say she passed her exams gave me a sense of achievement and I have never looked back since. I launched and ran a tuition centre in West London and have taught an array of students since.

To further my tutoring experience, I did some voluntary work across various secondary schools with the Tutorfair Foundation. I've worked with students on a one to one basis and in small groups to delivering lessons to BTEC students.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I enjoy teaching Accounting and have taught undergraduate and masters students studying Accounting. I also enjoy tutoring the professional qualifications such as AAT, CIMA, and ACCA PM and APM papers.

I also tutor maths, non-verbal reasoning, numeracy papers including QTS exam preparation.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Various teachers have inspired me throughout school and uni. From having the right attitude to learning by repetition, I've picked up several great things fromthe awesome teachers that I have worked with.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

My top three qualities are to be a good listener and observer, be flexible and stretch students. A good tutor has the ability to see if a student is grappling with a topic or whizzing through them. Being able to test their application of knowledge and establish what sets them back to addressing that knowledge gap, a good tutor must be observant.

In addition, a good tutor must be flexible and recognise that every learner is different. Each student learns at their own pace and tutors must be versatile and creative.

Last but not least, a good tutor will encourage students to solve 'stretch/challenging' questions to further their understanding of particular topics.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

My students are from various walks of life. One of my tutees took up AAT studies 20 years after leaving secondary school. She found studying challenging and was not sure that she would understand it, let alone passing the exam. In the first session, we talked about exam confidence and laid out a learning plan that she would commit to.

Three months later, she completed level 2. Her success gave her a massive confidence boost and went on to complete level three.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

One of the challenges in accountancy (or any other subjects for that matter) is the ability to read through the questions and break it down.

Is the information relevant or is it a red herring? For written tasks, it is the ability to answer questions in a succinct and coherent way without rambling on about the same points. Be specific and contextualising the answers. It is vital to make the link and relate the answers back to the case study.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I enjoy empowering others through education. After all, knowledge is power. I also enjoy coffee and cake :)
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I enjoy celebrating my students' success and I am a flexible tutor :)
