About Suva

PhD in Physics; original and inspiring maths/physics tutor

- A few words about me:

My background is in theoretical physics: I studied as an undergrad at Imperial College and completed a PhD (and published papers) in the areas of quantum computation and topological phases of matter at the University of Leeds.

As a full-time private maths and physics tutor, I am truly passionate about teaching these subjects. I tutor not as a hobby or 'on the side', but rather with the utmost professionalism and attention to detail. Furthermore, I am always striving to undergo 'continuous professional development': I try to reflect and learn from other educators to make the learning experience for my tutees more interesting and inspiring.

I have 10+ years of teaching experience in various settings, and I have an ability to inspire and foster a love of learning (and have fun in the process!). This is borne out by many of my students becoming genuinely fascinated by maths/physics (when perhaps initially they weren't!) and even going on to study these subjects at higher levels.

During the 2016-17 academic year, I tutored four GCSE and six A-level students. Three of these students were taught online (see the 'PLEASE NOTE' section below for details on how I deliver online lessons).

I have an enhanced DBS certificate (issued 2/12/16).

In my 'spare time' I have a keen interest in music, both playing and listening to it.

- My approach to tutoring:

My aim is to help students realise their potential and appreciate the wider significance of physics and maths. To this end, I try to impart a genuine understanding of concepts and guard against rote memorisation. In particular, I enjoy discovering original ways to present standard material, and use powerful tools such as videos and simulations to make abstract concepts seem more concrete. I strive to make concepts 'come alive' or more tangible wherever possible by using simple practical demonstrations. A favourite of mine is to use a guitar or acoustic piano to demonstrate ideas in vibrations and waves (a core topic in GCSE, A level and university physics).

I teach in a relaxed fashion, and strive to establish a bond between the tutee and myself such that the tutee feels comfortable to learn. I ensure that students have a sound grasp of the basics before moving onto more challenging topics. Material is covered at a speed which is comfortable for the student. Indeed, I encourage tutees to 'flag up' any difficulties or confusion they may have so that extra time can be spent dealing with these. As well as setting homework problems (there is no way to learn physics and maths other than doing lots of problems!), I will often set little questions in the midst of a lesson to see if the student is getting it! When appropriate, I set homework that is more open-ended/enquiry based to encourage students to take ownership of their learning. Examples include understanding how electric circuits work using simulations, and investigating mathematical relationships using online software.

I am careful in ensuring that the syllabus is covered, and have an extensive collection of past exam papers and solutions of the various examination boards. This being said, I am not afraid of going a bit beyond the syllabus (when appropriate) and teaching students more than what they 'need to know to do well on the exam'. An example of this is exposing students to certain chapters of Feynman`s celebrated lectures on physics (written primarily for undergrads) in order to broaden their horizons.

Unlike some tutors, I meticulously plan and tailor each lesson to the needs of each individual tutee and don't spend valuable lesson time setting homework (I set homework via email). Coupled with the quality of teaching I offer (you can see some feedback below), I therefore believe my rates represent value for money.

PLEASE NOTE:

1. Due to time constraints I would prefer the tutee to travel to me/conduct lessons online. However, if this is not possible I may be prepared to travel to you.

2. My quoted hourly rate is applicable for one-to-one GCSE level (or equivalent) tuition. For lower levels, my rate will be lower while for higher levels it will be higher. This can be implemented via Tutorfair's 'custom pricing' facility. Please contact me for more details.

3. Many people are sceptical about the effectiveness of online lessons, and this is usually due to a misunderstanding of what it entails. The truth is that they can be just as effective as 'face-to-face' tuition. My online lessons are delivered using skype and an online whiteboard. This whiteboard can be seen and written on simultaneously by myself and tutee, and is flexible and easy to use. The tutee has access to the whiteboard after the lesson. I ask for pictures/scans of the homework to be sent to me before the next lesson.

4. Cramming or 'binge tuition' a few weeks/months before an exam is not conducive to genuine, long-term understanding of a subject. If you are seeking tuition I would urge you to start as soon as possible.

Clear-cut explanations to a difficult subject

Written by Ayan D
Suva has allowed me to gain an in-depth understanding of the topics covered in A-Level Physics and surrounding topics. His lessons would provide an opportunity to iron out holes in my understanding from what I was taught in school. Suva also provided lots of questions and notes to look at outside of lessons to ensure that I did understand the topics which we covered in lesson. Without the additional insight I gained for Suva's lessons I wouldn't have been able to achieve to my full potential at A-Level.

Physics tutoring

Written by Suchana M
Suva has really transformed my son's understanding of physics. He now receives A* grades without excessive cramming or stressful breakdowns that can occur as a result of failing to understand a subject despite hours of hard work. He ensures that students receive the right balance of exam technique tips and actual understanding of the topic at hand. I have found him to be friendly and keen to engage with light banter and chat with my son so that lessons never seem overly demanding to him.

Excellent Physics & Maths A-Level Tutor

Written by Mr M
We’ve found Suva to be a very competent tutor for both A-level Physics and Maths (Mechanic) which were the subjects that my son was struggling with. He’s got a very easy going personality which works well with my son.
I believe Suva also covers Maths (Core) but it’s not a subject that my son currently needs help with.
Suva has taken time to address any fundamental problems that my son had with previous topics prior to starting with him. Some of these have come to light during the lesson and others with the homework that he sets so he will then make sure that my son understands each topic and will keep trying different approaches until one clicks. The homework is always appropriate to what was covered in the lesson as well as what my son should already know. This shows me that Suva is taking time to plan each lesson and the related homework. For us the goal was to get my son in a good position for his Mocks in Jan which he’s made good progress towards. We’ll be looking to continue on after the Mocks with Suva up to the summer exams.

My son will be taking his Mocks in the new year so that will be the real test but he's feeling more confident then at the end of his first year.

Suva Physics Reference

Written by Arka C
Suva has been an extremely useful person in helping me understand physics to higher level and helping me progress well in my A levels. His teaching shows a deep and thorough understanding of the content relevant to course and he always strives to teach beyond the syllabus in order to gain a more fundamental understanding of course material. This has helped me gain a wider interest in physics and has especially helped me with my physics A level.

Great Physics A Level Tutor

Written by Denis M
Suva was always very clear and concise in explanations, having decided the lesson content a few days before the lesson date he would prepare a brief page of notes to cover in the lesson while making sure the explanations were slow enough to understand however trying to push my knowledge once i was comfortable with the basics. A lot of the content i had covered before but not understood in the way i was taught it and was extremely helpful to learn it fresh from a completely different point, often only using the book as a brief guide and the explanations extending in a slightly more comprehensible way from his own knowledge of learning it. I have no doubts that my jump from a D at AS to a B at A level was heavily helped by him and i would definitely recommend him to anyone in need of physics tutoring.
