Gap Year
• Thailand - After completing secondary education I embarked on a gap year, which began with a trip to Thailand to work with children.
I travelled alone to the Phang Nga District of Thailand in order to volunteer my time working with children for 3 weeks. The first 1 and a half weeks were spent teaching English and Maths to Burmese children in a local school. The second 1 and half weeks were spent at an orphanage for children orphaned by the 2004 Tsunami.
• Broadfields Primary School – I have worked as a Primary School Teaching Assistant from October 2013, where I aid the teaching of children in Year 3 and Year 6. I provide detailed lesson plans for teachers, run an after school Computer Programming clubs and also teach my own academically gifted and talented class each week.
Both experiences have provided me with invaluable interaction with young children, foreign and local and have been essential in improving my communication skills with a variety of people both older and younger than myself, something which I believe will be perfect for a job as a camp coach.
Imperial College School of Medicine
As a current medical student at Imperial College London, I am aware of the application process required to enter medicine, including sitting the entrance exams or preparing for interviews.
Paediatrics Society – As a current member of the Paediatrics Play Team, I work with children of all ages every two weeks with the Paediatric Ward and A&E Ward in St Mary’s Hospital, playing games with the sickly children.
Schools Plus – I also volunteer as a tutor in an Imperial Schools Plus Scheme where I travel to a school once a week to tutor children from underprivileged areas in AS Level Biology and Chemistry.
Vision – I work as a volunteer with Imperial Medical School Vision Scheme to help underprivileged children apply to medical school, and have held mock interviews and medical examination preparation sessions with applicants to medicine.
Work Experience
• Croydon Mayday Hospital - I have spent one week in June 2011 at Croydon Mayday Hospital, shadowing a junior doctor and a physiotherapist. Whilst on a ward round I noticed the communications between different disciplines and how vital they are in ensuring a patient`s welfare.
• St Mary’s Hospital, London – During June 2012 I spent one week in an operating theatre, observing various types of surgery including laparoscopic gastric band procedures, hernia repairs and a TEMS procedure.
• GP Surgery, London - Kingsbury – I have spent one week at a GP Surgery, observing the vital relationship between a GP and patient, and the necessary communications involved. I also saw the alert and responsible nature of a doctor in an emergency during the sudden syncope of a patient.
I learnt the organisation required to run a GP Surgery, through filing patient documents and finding prescri ptions. I have learnt the basics of the role of receptionists within a GP Surgery, such as their importance in ensuring appointments are made information is communicated correctly between patients and doctors, and prescri ptions are distributed accordingly to name simply a few roles.
• Norwood Kennedy Leigh Centre - Hendon– I currently work at a Norwood disabled children’s centre in Hendon, as part of the Unity program for the past 2 years, every week on a Sunday afternoon. I gain a priceless sense of satisfaction working with these children, and am constantly taught the importance of patience and communication.
I work with children of varying disabilities, from autism to Down’s syndrome, and accompany them for 3 hours each Sunday, playing games, reading books but also engaging in arts and crafts, as well as other activities of the child’s choice. The children age from 3-16 and I have grown to recognise each of them and their individual personalities.
• Great Ormond Street Work Experience Day – A day of lectures by various paediatric specialities, including A&E, as well as providing an insight into the medical career in general.
