I have developed a reasonable fluency in French since beginning a serious attempt to learn the language in the mid eighties during my time in the local Customs &Excise. I have also gained a certificate from the Alliance Francaise in 1996 as well as an A level the following year from Basildon College. I believe that a firm grammatical knowledge of the language is the best approach as this will provide the skeleton upon which the students later acquisition of vocabulary can be placed. Even with beginners I have a dive straight in approach whereby the source material will be back issues of Paris Match magazine. However carefully prepared notes will enable the student to distinguish in the text before them the particular grammar/vocabulary points being taught.
