About Stepan

Since 2014 I have worked as a teacher in a specialist interim school for students not in mainstream education. In my role I am the sole teacher for students in 1:1 classes. I design their work schedule in accordance with curriculums and the students' needs. I also set and assess coursework and field trips for the exam board. I have extensive experience working with students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. Many of our clients at the interim school have SEND. I also specialise in home schooling programmes.

I graduated with a First from UCL and have received 4 A*s at A level and 11 A*s at GCSE. Having achieved academic excellence for myself I hope to help others achieve their best too.

From my time tutoring I have identified two primary obstacles to pupils fulfilling their potential. A lack of confidence and teaching not tailored to the preferred learning style of the pupil. These two obstacles are best overcome if tackled simultaneously. By identifying my pupil's learning style and strengths I hope to demonstrate to my pupils their unique potential and capitalise on it. On numerous occasions my tutees have actually exceeded their initial expectations of their progress.

My most successful strategy with pupils has been to maintain a shifting focus and lesson structure depending on what conclusions I draw from regular assessment of my pupil. As an aspiring artist I value creativity and implement it in my teaching - I am always trying out new methods if current ones are not bringing the best possible results.

I am bilingual in English and Russian. Having grown up in England with Russian heritage I offer Russian tuition to all levels from beginner to advanced. I have experience in preparing students for the GCSE and the A level, with an excellent track record of success.

Having taught at a specialist school for children not in mainstream education, I am experienced in designing entire course programmes both as sole teacher and as a tutor supporting school work.

Each lesson starts with a chat with the student to ascertain what we will be trying to do in the lesson. Once we set out objectives together, we proceed with the work. Every student has different needs; some need more direct guidance, others need to be given free rein to experiment with their own ideas.

My overarching goal with every student is to give them confidence. This of course involves imparting useful skills to them but also making sure they have a positive mindset when it comes to approaching things on their own. A simple yet effective method is to always find something to praise in the student's work, and something to constructively criticise.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have been teaching since 2014 and no other career path has tempted me away. Having been a high achiever when it came to school exams (11 A*s at GCSE and 4 A*s at A level), I have always sought to help close friends by sharing my ways of working and my understanding of exam technique. I take great pleasure in seeing those around me thrive, knowing that I helped them along the way. I chose the field of humanities because I like the ambiguity and complexity of studying the world of people and language.

Over the past decade, I have developed wide-ranging teaching skills with experience in non-mainstream education, home education, and private tutoring. I have taught both national (UK) and international curricula, and have a strong background in teaching students with special education needs, especially autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia, and ADHD.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach a range of humanities subjects, and I nurture a broad curiosity even in those subjects that I don't teach. I subscribe to the educational mentality of the Renaissance era intellectual, where each field of knowledge has something to offer in our understanding of the world. I like to inspire my students to be curious about the world, and then to understand how their subject is an important piece of the puzzle.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I would say that the likes of Sir Isaac Newton, Aristotle, and Leo Tolstoy have a great deal to teach us. Their everlasting commitment to enlightening the world and lessening the burden of human ignorance is worth more than any material wealth.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor is highly adaptable to the changing needs of each student. One day, one exercise might work, another day, the student's mood means it is out of the question. Being highly empathetic and understanding the person you are working with is absolutely essential.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I have seen countless students receive extremely demoralising marks at school. I know the effect of this first-hand, the strong temptation to give up and label yourself as 'stupid' or 'slow'. I know both from my own experience and from observing the transformation of my students that a mark only defines you as much as you let it. The problem is never the student, it is always the circumstances of the education, and these can always be changed to suit the student better, even without a tutor.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Within the humanities, one finds that the students who don't read very much struggle to express themselves in written form. This can be challenging to overcome as our modern world is often not conducive to developing a good reading habit and progress can be slow. The key here is persistence and good guidance from someone who can work out what reading materials will be both manageable, useful, and stimulating for the student.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion is to the leave the world in a better place than how I found it. To this end, I try to educate as thoroughly as possible and get involved in local wildlife conservation as a physical activity to keep fit and do my bit for the environment.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

Being a full-time tutor with more than 4,000 hours of experience across various platforms and agencies, I am one of the most experienced tutors you will find. I have worked with so many different students, I have a depth of strategies and approaches to draw on, regardless of how complex a student's needs are.
