About Sophie
Hi! My name is Sophie. I am a highly qualified, dedicated, friendly and engaging teacher with a passion for everything English and language-related. I am a patient and understanding person who will work with you or your child to help you achieve your goals in a way that makes learning feel like a pleasure.
As well as 10 years of teaching experience to monolingual, bilingual and multilingual groups, I have a BA in English Language and Literature, an MA (Distinction) in Screenwriting, a Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism and the CELTA certificate in English language teaching (as well as various British Council qualifications including the Primary Teacher Training Course and the Certificate in Secondary English Language Teaching). I have taught in Paris, Seville and London, with students from all over the world, and have personally tutored ages 7 to adult, from absolute beginner to proficiency. At the British Council in Paris, where I taught for six years, I was one of the only teachers to teach across all departments - early years, primary, secondary, adult, business, exams and bilingual. I am equally comfortable teaching children and adults, and I love the way that one-to-one tutoring allows the teacher to adapt fully to the needs of the student, helping them to get results in areas they may have previously struggled with. I create a positive learning environment and I find it extremely rewarding to watch my students grow in confidence.
I have taught all the Cambridge Exams (from Starters, Movers and Flyers right up to CPE) and am a highly experienced IELTS teacher, having taught intensive classes and one- to-one preparation for ten years with proven results. I also taught English GCSE for several years to bilingual French/English students, and have taught in schools, private academies, in-company and in students' homes. I speak French and Spanish and currently work as a film journalist, subtitle translator, proof-reader and transcriber as well as a personal tutor.
I also have a particular interest in creative writing and literature, and can help you with everything from essay planning to story structure. I am very experienced with university applications and personal statement writing, having tutored and taught students who were accepted to MIT, Brown and Cambridge University, amongst others.
It is extremely important to me that students are happy with their lessons and feel that they are making progress. I will work closely with students and/or parents to define your individual goals and needs, and will provide organised and structured lessons around these particular aims.
Whether you have recently moved to the country and you or your child needs help with English communication, you have an IELTS exam to pass or you want to learn how to structure a screenplay, please get in touch with me to discuss how I can help!

I was Sophie's Line Manager at the British Council Paris for the academic year (2015-16) during which time I observed her teaching several times. She proved on each occasion to be an excellent teacher who made the profession look easy. In the classroom, she has a very calm and supportive manner which meant even the most challenging students responded to her methods well. She had a full teaching schedule which means teaching Primary, Secondary and Adults and she excelled at all of them. Furthermore, as a colleague she was very well respected and played a very active role in the teaching centre. This included mentoring a newer teacher who was struggling with some of her classes. Feedback from her students and colleagues was overwhelmingly positive and she was a great loss to our centre when she decided to pursue a new challenge back in the UK.
I have made a lot of progress in English thanks to Sophie. She was very kind and attentive to my needs and my difficulties.
Sophie was a wonderful English teacher for my 9 years old son. He is half british and half french but he needed help especially with his writing and he improved a lot with her methods. He did a lot of oral and written exercises , but also a good deal of very creative work such as writing stories and taking part in a writing contest. As as result he gets the best marks in his class at the moment ! If Sophie was still in Paris, I would certainly ask her again to give lessons to my son.
Sophie McVeigh was my teacher at British Council in Paris during three years from 2012 until 2015. During that period, I could always appreciate her outstanding qualities as a teacher: patient, dynamic, very helpful when a member of the group needed some specific help. I can say Sophie is the best English teacher I have ever had.
Sophie accepted to give private lessons to my children who needed to improve their English before attending a Summer Camp in Canada. I must say they really enjoyed the time they spent with her and they were much more confident after just a few lessons with Sophie.I am so fortunate to have had english lessons with Sophie in Spain before moving to England, my level of english and grammar has improved greatly to the point I can confidently say my english and grammar is far greater than many english speaking friends ;) One of her greatest assets was her creativity in the classroom making education fun for us!
I would strongly recommend Sophie because of her positive attitude and willingness to teach.
Gracias Sophie!
JuliaSophie was creative enough to adapt her teaching to my way of learning, it allowed me to quickly make a lot of progress. I enjoyed her lesson for a year!
