About Sonia

Very Experienced Primary Teacher

I would like to start my personal statement with a quote: “The essence of teaching is to make learning contagious, to have one idea spark another.” I chose this quote because it does reflect my teaching philosophy and who I am as a teacher.

Teaching is my chosen calling, a calling I strive to undertake with love and imagination,so as a primary teacher I always have one major goal: 1) ensure the highest standards in my teaching to equip children with the skills to become enthusiastic and independent learners.

1) While teaching children my main priority is to inform them of my high expectations of work and behaviour. The way I implement this is by supporting a positive teaching environment where there are a range of techniques to encourage them to be a part of learning. At the beginning of the lessons I always identified the aims and intended learning outcomes of the lesson; use engaging, short starters to stimulate their curiosity and throughout the lesson I assess their learning by using use effective questioning, praising and listening.

About my background as a teacher: I finished my degree in Portugal just after my 23rd birthday and I was looking forward to extending my learning in my first teaching post. That opportunity came along when I started working as a volunteer in local primary schools teaching English as a foreign language. This experience enabled me to help the children improving their reading and writing skills, which I really enjoyed. I was patient and understanding while listening to the children read, and helped them with words they found difficult.
I found it extremely rewarding to see the look of satisfaction on a child’s face as they completed a piece of artwork, or took part in a group activity knowing that I helped give the children the confidence and ability to do so.
This experience gave me an insight into the running of a classroom, and reinforced my desire to teach in a primary school.

I am a primary teacher who has a lot of experience in teaching children as young as 5. However, I have been teaching Year 3 and 4 for the last 4 years.
I can help children raising their levels in English, Maths and Science, but if help is needed in another subject I will be to assist in that as well.

Sonia’s Reference

Written by Elena M
I have known Sonia for 10 years and in professional capacity, so I would highly recommend her as a tutor. She is driven, organised teacher who delivers inspiring lessons to her students.
She has a wonderful rapport with people of all ages, especially children. Her ability to connect with her students and her talent at teaching simple concepts, as well as more advanced topics, are both truly superior. She also has excellent written and verbal communication skills with both parents and teachers. Sonia accomplishes all these tasks with great initiative and with a positive attitude.
I recommend Sonia to you without reservation.
