About Simon
I am an enthusiastic current Evolutionary Biology PhD student at UCL and IoZ. My academic lineage inlcudes esteemed biologists such as Charles Darwin and Nikko Tinbergen. My research investigates the evolution and transmission of cultural animal behaviours using Namibian Chacma baboons as a model species. I am therefore highly knowledgeable regarding evolutionary biology and animal behaviour, and I also integrate advanced genetics, physiology, anatomy, ecology and statistical modelling in my research.
I have an MSc from Queen Mary University (distinction) as well as BSc (Hons) Zoology with Industrial / Professional Expereince from University of Manchester, and I am keen to become a university lecturer once I have completed a PhD. I am already a published scientist in the field of primatology and I love talking about and teaching science, both theoretical and practical, drawing from by own experience and using the latest discoveries.
I am highly experienced in teaching for someone of my age, having taught from KS1 through to masters level. My teaching style is incredibly friendly and bubbly as I believe that a friendly and undomineering atmosphere is where a student learns best, as this completely opposes the school environment (in my experience). I am a confident teacher and public speaker and I have presented my own research to large and small audiences of differing scientific backgrounds. I pride myself on my adaptability to my student's needs and I will tailor lessons specific to them and not just use a generic worksheet like ones they get from school. I fully aim to help my students succeed in achiveing their goals and I offer, as friendly advice during my sessions, advice on revision techniques, career guidance and admissions assistance (I have worked as a student ambassador closley with university admissions teams).
To conclude, my style of teaching is different from all other tutors as I will not teach the student how to pass the exam. Instead, I will teach how aspects of science in the curriculum, and outside of it, intertwine with one another - thus building a strong foundational scientific knowledge in my students. Through this understanding, my students are able to tackle scientific questions which they do not know the answer to in a critical and logical fashion, and are able to formulate, more often than not, the correct answer. Of course I will stick to the curriculum so as to not deviate from an exam but it is important to not just teach about factual recall but understanding of scientific processes in general, so the next exam will be much easier!!

Simon is very intelligent and personable. He can explain complex topics clearly and concisely, in an engaging manner.
Simon would make an amazing tutor for any student. His passion and drive for biological sciences is infectious and shines through his every endeavour. I have been privileged to work with Simon on a number of occasions and I have always been able to learn and develop my own scientific knowledge from his vast and broad understanding of the subject. His understanding of the biological field is unfaltering, evidenced by his esteemed published paper, and his patient, empathetic approach to teaching means that science can be accessible to anyone that listens.
I am yet to find a topic within the field that he cannot communicate into digestible material.Simon has a 1st class degree in Biology. He is very intelligent, personable and is able to explain complex topics concisely and clearly in an engaging manner.
