About Shrey

I am a motivated, aspiring 18 year old currently attending the London School of Economics to study Finance. Previously I attended one of the top selective schools in the country (the Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School) from 11-18, securing 10 A* at iGCSE/GCSE and 4 A* in my A-levels (where I studied Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Economics). I scored the highest marks in AS economics in my year group (and the 2nd highest mark in Economics at A2), and averaged 99% UMS in A-level mathematics, with my school awarding me a prestigious scholarship for all-round performance.

Interested in economics, finance and mathematics (specifically its usage in economics), at the age of 14 I started a website where I write articles on economics and finance, and the website currently has over 200,000 views from all around the world. To pursue this interest I entered a Schroders Economics Essay competition, where I placed 2nd out of all entrants. In my free time, I enjoy playing lawn tennis, table tennis and learning about investing, having traded on the financial markets in my summer holidays. I currently am also pursuing an online course on computer programming, having completed one on value investing.

As I have just recently started university, I do not have that much teaching experience in the conventional sense, although I have taught GCSE maths to students at an academy for a year. Moreso, I have created and ran a society at my school teaching young teenagers the basics of financial markets and investment for a number of years, in addition to being instrumental in running sessions of other societies. However, more importantly, I feel I have recent, relevant experience of what makes a good teacher in the Internet era having been taught by some of the best teachers in the UK at my school.

Having been a student at a secondary school myself very recently, I have some experience of strategies that actually improve a student's performance and those that do not. One strategy I do not espouse is simply "learning things for the exam", as such an approach prioritises grades over understanding the content and quite often leads to an underwhelming performance in the examination (in my experience). What I focus on as a tutor is gaining a step-by-step understanding of the mechanics that govern a particular mechanism, or in simpler words, helping explain why things work as they do, as opposed to how they work. This equips the tutee with a broader base of knowledge that can be applied to many different situations in an examination, causing them to have a much higher chance of success in the exam hall. A friendly approach makes the tutee want to be taught and as such I am patient, calm and jovial in my approach to lessons, knowing before I come in where the issue is in the tutee's understanding.
