About Shane
Hi, Thanks for browsing! I have lots of experience in education and the real world of work. Developing pupil mind-set is key to their attaining knowledge, and skills.
• My background
Originally from Ireland, I have been working and studying in the UK for over ten years. Until recently I was doing an engineering PhD. With a view to teacher training later next year, at present I am focusing on tutoring and classroom assistance work. My key subjects are chemistry and physics, and maths at secondary school level.
Whilst at school I enjoyed science, chemistry in particular, which led me to study chemical engineering at Queens University, Belfast (1999; 2:1 hons). Subsequently I worked as a process engineer, amongst other fields (including teaching in Italy). Having always been drawn to environmental topics, I did a master’s at the University of Leeds (2004/05; 1:1 hons) and subsequently worked in environmental consultancy. To consolidate my environmental and engineering background, I later applied for a PhD at University College London (UCL).
Along with my technical background, I have many other interests including languages, the arts and current affairs as well as sports (cycling and jogging) and the outdoors (hiking in particular).
On a personal level, you’ll find that I am conscientious but also fun and sociable. I am genuinely interested in people, with friends noting that I am a good listener.
• Teaching style
Through my tutoring, mentoring and teaching experience I have developed strong skills and insight. Whist personable by nature, I also take learning seriously. I set high standards for myself (evident in my career) and strive to instil the same in my pupils. I put a lot into lesson planning; however, flexibility is also important - adapting to circumstances, and picking up on the ability and response of different pupils. I also aim to make learning relevant and interesting - eliciting pupil understanding and ideas, and giving them ownership. This helps build their confidence, creativity and self-motivation. Imparting my own subject knowledge is thus only an element.
• Tutoring experience
Over the years I have tutored and taught in various capacities.
Most recently I volunteered with Action Tutoring at two London schools, focusing on maths in preparation for GCSE (AQA) and SAT exams. For the GCSE I worked with a male pupil 1:1 weekly for over an hour (Jan-Jun18). I developed lesson plans focusing on subject knowledge, exam technique and study skills. To observe the pupil gain confidence, self-motivation and academic ability over the period was really rewarding.
My SAT work was with two pupil pairs, male and female, ranging in ability and personality traits (Nov17-Feb18). I tailored my lesson plans accordingly, and produced materials and exercises to make the lessons more interactive and fun. On completion I took the initiative to write a structured review for each pupil. The experience highlighted the importance of nurturing positive pupil mind-sets from a young age.
Prior to that I tutored science (chemistry and physics) privately to a female student (Mar-May13) in preparation for the GCSE (Edexcel). I structured the lessons in parallel with the student’s progress at school, dealing with subject queries as they arose. This also included exam-style questions.
During my PhD I volunteered through UCL as a mentor at local secondary schools (at A-level principally) (Nov11-May12; Nov12-Mar13). For this I assisted pupils (individually and in groups) with university application and study skills, and discussed their career aspirations (science in particular).
I also have experience teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) in Italy (Oct00 - Jun01). I was responsible for students across a range of proficiency and age levels (kids, teenagers and adults), both class-based and 1:1.

I have worked with Shane, acting as an industrial supervisor, over the
course of his postgraduate research (EngD at UCL). The work was both highly
technical but also had real practical application. Shane worked diligently
and in a structured way both in the generation and the coalition of the data
to try and elucidate complex physical and chemical phenomena. This
experience was essentially about problem solving, which is at the very heart
of Maths and Science disciplines.
I have kept in close contact with Shane since that time, and his obvious
enthusiasm for teaching and tutoring is clear.
I feel sure that he would not only work diligently and in a careful way to
improve the skills of any pupils he tutors in the STEM disciplines. In turn,
he but would also be especially sensitive to the wants of those students who
lack confidence or some basic areas of understanding in a given subject.I am writing to confirm that Shane has been volunteering with Action Tutoring from 16/11/2017. Action Tutoring provides volunteer tutors to work with pupils preparing for GCSE exams in schools across the country and Shane has volunteered as a maths tutor for an hour a week at both a primary and secondary school in North London
Shane supported 2 pupils and worked closely with them, devising lesson plans and activities, working to build both their subject knowledge as well as their confidence and study skills.
Shane’s help has been very much appreciated by the school and has provided a wonderful opportunity for pupils to benefit from some intensive one to one support in preparation for their exams.
Shane was a committed, reliable and enthusiastic volunteer, relating very well to pupils, teachers and fellow tutors and was a valuable volunteer both for the school and for our organisation.
