About Shane
My name is Dr Shane Fudge. I have worked at two Russell Group universities since completing my PhD in 2006– at the University of Surrey and, more recently, a five year teaching post at the University of Exeter as part of the Centre for Geography, Environment and Society. My current teaching expertise and research interests have evolved from an rigorous academic background in sociology, politics and human geography. I can teach at all levels and with all levels of ability. I come from an non-traditional academic background and can work with students on confidence as well as their academic knowledge. I have also worked in schools and colleges in the area with students who have special needs. I am a patient, excellent teacher and was nominated for a teaching award at the University of Exeter in 2017.

Shane is an excellent teacher with a great deal of experience in tutoring at al levels, including at a top 10 UK university. I found that his students enjoyed engaging in discussion with Shane in lectures and workshops. He is a great teacher.
Dr. Liam Reinhardt
Senior lecturer
University of ExeterI am very happy to recommend Dr Shane Fudge for this position. I worked closely with Shane at the Centre for Geography, Environment and Society (CGES) at the University of Exeter, from 2012-17, where I was Head of Department (2015-17).
Shane made a really vital contribution to this academic teaching and research unit since joining us in 2012 on a temporary position, teaching on a range of modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. This was quite a challenge for Shane as he had not had much experience of teaching students at that point, but one to which he rose extremely well. The experience proved a positive one and Shane should feel confident about his excellent skills as a teacher. Shane had strong determination to improve his skills and reflect on his learning. Indeed in 2012 Shane was nominated by the University of Exeter Student’s Guild Teaching Awards 2017 for Best Postgraduate Taught Supervisor; strong evidence of his skill and ability as a teacher.
In research Shane worked extremely hard submitting work for publication and applying for research grants. With the latter, he had some notable success (particulary £2,657,954 million EU ERDF for the 3 year Cornwall New Energy project). He forged some very successful partnerships and although some bits have not been successful the experience of working with collaborators and across different funding boards will him in good stead in the future. He was successful in getting his research published in well-known academic journals and collaborated successfully with other academics as co-authors.
Shane also made a significant contribution to outreach activities for the University and was very involved in working with local groups in activities around energy governance, local level policy making, and exploring the interface between behaviour and technological change. This should again stand him in good stead with future potential employees as it shows that he clearly understands the impact agenda and has the capacity to engage with a range of stakeholders in relation to best practice and local and national governance. He was a great ambassador for our Centre and the University of Exeter in Cornwall in this work.
In administration and management Shane made an important contribution to the running of the Centre, by taking on a range of duties, including mentoring students and the program directorship for the collaborative MRes Energy, Environment and Resilience programme with Bath and Bristol Universities. This latter job was extremely challenging and he deserves particular credit for the way in which he made this work across three institutions and also kept the students studying on this pathway happy. Once again, Shane’s success with this experiment should give him confidence about taking on new challenges in the future.
In summary, since joining the University in 2012, Shane made a really excellent contribution to the teaching, administration and research work of the University. Shane was a much liked colleague and we would have loved to have kept him on at the University but his post was unfortunately a temporary one and it was not possible to renew it. He left an important legacy both with colleagues and wider stakeholders in Cornwall, particularly through the new Cornwall energy project but also through the many students he taught - at both undergraduate and Masters level. Shane not only knows the meaning of hard work but how to get along well with his colleagues, bringing good humour and determination to every task he undertakes. I wish him every success in the future.View more recommendations
