Experienced, engaging, inventive and committed

*Taking a break for July and August to have a baby!*

I have taught pupils from year 4 to A-Level, with a wide range of ability: from those with serious special needs and children who have been taken out of mainstream schooling altogether, to able and diligent pupils who just want a little extra stretching.

Science and Maths are my main subjects but I also home-school English and History, and cover the verbal and non-verbal reasoning tests required for 11+ entrance.

Following inspirational teachers in my own life, I believe in making lessons enjoyable and interesting to the pupil, and tailoring them to each individual’s needs. Experience of special needs in my own family gave me the reserves of patience and creativity to take an individual-centred approach to each pupil.

I have been working with young people since my teens; for several years I worked as a child photographer, coaxing the best out of subjects of all ages no matter how ‘bad’ a day they were having. I now work in the Tutorfair office during the day, helping parents find the right tutors!

Kind Knowledgeable Inspiring Tutor for Sciences

Year 10 daughter disheartened by being in top group for Sciences, meaning her worst subject, Chemistry, is due to be taken early in a few weeks' time.

Serena's enthusiastic, patient and heartening approach, her knowledge of current exam techniques, were not only reassuring, but inspiring for my daughter. My child is now confident enough to do her best.

I would highly recommend Serena, as she is kind, knowledgeable, enthusiastic and patient, a truly inspiring tutor.

Bring out your best with this superb tutor

We set Serena the tough job of preparing our daughter for 13+ entrance exams in Maths, Science and English, all on a very tight time frame. No mean feat! Lucky for us Serena has superb organisational skills and laser like focus on the task at hand. The improvement in our daughters grasp of a wide range of subject matter is amazing, moreover she now has the confidence to really do her best in the exam room.

If you need a tutor to help bring out your best look no further than Serena Atkins.

Great tutor

Serena taught our daughter maths for around six months on a weekly basis - an hour a week. We had two independent schools out of London that we were targeting, and our daughter's preference was the more academic of those two. So, Serena had a challenge on her hands: our daughter currently attends a nice but very multicultural inner city primary school and her maths was ok, but she worked slowly and had no experience of exam practice.

Serena's approach was to be very strategic - she made sure she knew the curriculum, and got it covered in the time we had, with a few weeks at the end for revision and exam practice. Her teaching methods are creative - quite visual, with mnenomics and posters - and she finds different ways to explain things if the first method isn't sinking in.

The crucial thing for us is that she's a naturally patient, warm person, so she was a great match for our shy daughter, who is bright but lacks confidence. We had got off to false starts with other, bossier tutors but our daughter was always happy to see Serena, and was eager to do the homework for her.

All in all, we can't recommend her more highly and we are hugely grateful to her for helping us through this extremely stressful period in our lives!
