Serena taught our daughter maths for around six months on a weekly basis - an hour a week. We had two independent schools out of London that we were targeting, and our daughter's preference was the more academic of those two. So, Serena had a challenge on her hands: our daughter currently attends a nice but very multicultural inner city primary school and her maths was ok, but she worked slowly and had no experience of exam practice.
Serena's approach was to be very strategic - she made sure she knew the curriculum, and got it covered in the time we had, with a few weeks at the end for revision and exam practice. Her teaching methods are creative - quite visual, with mnenomics and posters - and she finds different ways to explain things if the first method isn't sinking in.
The crucial thing for us is that she's a naturally patient, warm person, so she was a great match for our shy daughter, who is bright but lacks confidence. We had got off to false starts with other, bossier tutors but our daughter was always happy to see Serena, and was eager to do the homework for her.
All in all, we can't recommend her more highly and we are hugely grateful to her for helping us through this extremely stressful period in our lives!
