About Seb

I have been teaching English since 2012.

I hold a postgraduate degree from The University of Cambridge (PGCert in Teaching Creative Writing) and a CELTA (Certificate of English Language Teaching) and a Masters in Creative Writing and Education from Goldsmiths, University of London.

I help students with English 11+, Common Entrance, GCSE and IELTS by encouraging reading curiosity and boosting their creative writing skills. These lessons are also good for exposing young minds to current affairs - an important element for discursive essay writing for the GCSE Paper 2 questions and the IELTS Part 2 writing task.

My students have got into schools like Clifton College, Kings School and Stowe School as well as universities such as Kings College, UCL, Oxford, Anglia Ruskin, Middlesex, UAL and London Met. In addition, my track record in helping medical graduates enter the NHS, via the IELTS route as Junior doctors who have qualified overseas, is very high.

I have helped students from Japan, China, Turkey, Spain, Greece, France, Italy, Portugal, Poland, UAE, India and Russia achieve their dreams.

I am a published author of the novella Headcase - A Post-truth ghost story and have started to write my second novel, The Book of Thunder and Lightning as part of my Masters in Creative Writing and Education at Goldsmiths University of London.

_______________________________________________________________

I specialize in writing instruction for the IELTS essay part 2 question which is always the hardest to get a high band score in. Although I will also extensively cover all 4 parts of the test.

Here is an overview of what we will go over:

Understand the writing test, write clearly, organise your ideas and use a varied vocabulary.

The IELTS Writing test is designed to assess a wide range of writing skills, including how well you:

Write a response appropriately and organise ideas.
This is the case for whichever version of the IELTS test you are taking. The IELTS Writing test takes 60 minutes. Spend 20 minutes on Task 1, and 40 minutes on Task 2.

You will need to manage your own time, so make sure you move on to Task 2 after 20 minutes.

There are two tasks in the IELTS Writing test. You will be asked to write at least 150 words for Task 1 and at least 250 words for Task 2.

The content of the Writing test is different for IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training tests.

Write in a formal style in the IELTS Academic Writing test.

In Task 1 you will be presented with a graph, table, chart or diagram. You will be asked to describe, summarise or explain the information in your own words. This might involve describing and explaining data, describing the stages of a process or how something works, or describing an object or event.

In Task 2 you will be asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem. You should find the issues interesting and easy to understand.

The topics used in the IELTS General Training Writing test are of general interest.

In Task 1 you will be presented with a situation and asked to write a letter requesting information or explaining the situation. You can write the letter in a personal, semi-formal or formal style.

In Task 2 you will be asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem. You can use a fairly personal style.

I will cover all four parts of the test (reading, speaking, listening, writing) and prepare a course just for your needs. It will be fun and engaging and I will get the score you need!

About Seb

After graduating from University of the Arts London with a BA (Hons) in Communication Seb Duncan went on to work as an Art Director and then later as a Creative Director in advertising where he managed, art directed and wrote advertising scripts for radio and TV and digital media. Along the way, he also started training clients for their marketing and design requirements.

He worked in London for fifteen years and in 2008 went to Dubai as a Creative Director for a multinational advertising agency.
In 2012 he got married and went traveling with his wife and started teaching English with Dubai as a base.

That same year he got a post teaching the academic English course to undergraduates at the Dubai branch of Shiraz University, one of Iran’s most prestigious universities. This was an incredibly challenging job with large classes of terrifyingly bright young adults studying subjects as diverse as Engineering and Architecture to Finance and Chemistry!
A baptism by fire like no other.

Following that, he instructed at three colleges in Dubai as a freelancer. He ended up specialising in Business English, particularly in the areas of presentation skills and writing. He studied the IELTS exam and became the prime instructor for this at another college in Dubai. The classes were huge, but a lot of fun! Once a week the class was divided into a smaller Academic group, which he also planned lessons for and taught. These students were predominantly medical professionals looking to work for the NHS in the UK.

When asked why he should be your English Instructor, Seb says: “Having worked in the advertising industry for almost twenty years, I feel this gives me a natural edge in the education field because of my ability to effectively communicate difficult ideas and concepts in a fun and engaging and above all, memorable way. My approach is very student – centered as a result".

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I am a native speaker. I was brought up in London.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

This is a very tough question but Charles Dickens springs to mind. He is the perfect example of a writer who lived the lives of the people he wrote about. His natural empathy (and in some cases antipathy) for his characters makes his stories so fascinating and enduring. He is the quintessential London writer.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

That’s easy! The art of the discursive marker. English is such a slippery language in some ways. The grammar is fairly straightforward (compared to some other European languages), but the vocabulary is a bottomless pit. This is not least exemplified by expressions and phrases such as: however; having said that; partly; possibly; be that as may... the list is endless. The English language is a lesson in nuance and diplomacy. We can say one thing and say we meant something else with the flick of a word. It has more gears than a Formula One race car; you have to pay attention to keep up!
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

It’s the language of my birth and the whole world speaks it.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

It really depends on the aims. I think if the student lives with someone from their native country that can be a barrier to progress because they end up not continuing with English speaking after the lesson has ended.

I encourage a lot of reading and graded readers can be a great way to improve confidence with English vocabulary and to learn how stories are made. However, it really depends on the level of the student. I tend to focus on B2 through to the Native Speaker level.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

Listening (as a teacher) is more important than speaking. One thing I have noticed in my ten years of teaching is the more I enjoy the lessons the more the student enjoys them – it’s just the way it is! Also, the right group can make or break a class. If everyone is on the same page then we all progress together.

  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Prior to teaching, I was an advertising art director and creative director. I worked in The Middle East for nine years. In fact, I first started teaching English in Dubai UAE. All my classes were multi-national. While in Dubai, as well as travelling to Saudi Arabia and Lebanon, I visited Brazil, Iran, Spain, Turkey, Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic. I’ve probably missed out on a country but that pretty much covers it!
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

I have been teaching and tutoring since 21012. Having completed a specialized postgraduate qualification combined with extensive teaching and advertising industry experience gives me a natural edge in the education field because of my ability to effectively communicate difficult ideas and concepts in a fun, engaging, and above all student-focused way.
