About Scott

Hello, thank you for visiting my profile. My name is Scott and I’d be delighted to discuss your academic goals. I've got a strong track record of helping students achieve their desired grades and gain entry to top universities and placements. Last year 100% of my students were awarded places at their first choice university.

About me:

I’ve been a professional tutor since 2014 and worked with over 500 students from the UK and abroad. Education is my passion and I’ve been in the industry my whole life as a student, research scientist, tutor and consultant. I earned my PhD from Durham University in 2013 having achieved 1st class honours in Geology as an undergraduate. I’ve also studied at Leicester, Cambridge, Royal Holloway and understand the British university system very well.

Since graduating, I’ve developed my coaching skills and worked on understanding personality, ability and individual differences through psychometrics. I’ve also been featured on several media appearances, including the BBC and written many publications on effective practices for students.

I’ve been privileged to work with some fantastic students during my time as a tutor and am particularly proud of the results they have achieved. Please feel free to look through the reviews from other students and parents. On request, I will gladly put you in touch with some of my previous clients.

My Approach to Tution:

My tuition is entirely student-focused. Different students require different approaches to achieve their desired results. The goal is always to work with you to get the result you want in the most efficient way possible and make learning effective and enjoyable. For some students, that means focusing more on developing their knowledge in key areas, for others it’s improving exam technique or organising their workflow a little better.

During an introduction session, we will identify your strengths and areas that need improvement and come up with a strategy that works best for you.

Subject Specialist:

My services include the following subjects and levels:

Biology (GCSE, IGCSE, AS-Level, A-Level)
Chemistry (GCSE, IGCSE, AS-Level, A-Level)
Physics (GCSE, IGCSE, AS-Level, A-Level)
Geology (GCSE, IGCSE, AS-Level, A-Level, Degree)
Maths ((GCSE, IGCSE)

For each of these subjects I have in-depth knowledge of the specification for AQA, Edexcel and OCR and will provide you with a portfolio of resources. I can also tutor maths in addition to these subjects at your request.

My students have an impressive record of getting into their first choice university. I can help you with every aspect of your application from choosing the best degree course, to the personal statement and entry examinations (such as UKCAT, NSAA, TSA and other aptitude tests). I particularly enjoy working with A-Level students who are looking to study a STEM degree.

Coaching:

I believe that academic coaching is as important as subject tuition. Through our work together, we’ll look at how to improve time management, organization and reinforce productive habits. Many students find that they struggle with pre-exam anxiety or have been diagnosed with ADHD, dyslexia and other learning differences which provide additional challenges that need to be managed effectively to reach their academic potential. I’ve trained in areas of NLP and personal performance coaching which supports - and aligns with - subject tuition.

Resources:

Having access to the right resources is an important piece of the puzzle for a student to be successful. All of my students get access to a personalised library of materials (built over 10 years), that include examination papers, mark schemes, examiner reports, questions by topic and some suggested websites for revision. I’ve added all of these to an easy to navigate website which you’ll get login details to.

I also have resources to effectively document and track your progress, so we can quickly identify key areas/topics that need improvement. These can be customised depending on your specific goals and needs.

We can easily share and collaborate on work between sessions through Google Drive folders which I’ll set up for you on an introduction call.

Online Tutoring:

Today, online learning has become more important than ever. To get the most out of our sessions, I use an online tutoring platform which has been designed and built by educators and allows the students to save, search and playback any of the lessons we have online. You will be able to revise from any of the past sessions we have together online which provides a distinct advantage over in-person tuition. The platform is well designed to encourage interactive sessions, so you’ll be very active and engaged during the sessions which helps with learning and retention.

Schools and Universities:

I’ve tutored and coached over 500 students from the UK and International schools. Many of my international students are based in Russia, the Middle East, China, Hong Kong and Singapore, or are based in one of the international schools in the UK.

I’ve also taught students from the following Independent schools in the UK:

My Interests:

When I am not tutoring, I love to travel and was fortunate enough to do my PhD fieldwork collecting rocks from volcanoes in SE Asia. I also love sports, reading, coaching; and unsurprisingly, learning. I recently came across the term ‘multipotentialite’ in a TED talk, used to describe someone who has a diverse range of interests, and I think this best describes me.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My passion for tutoring started while teaching undergraduates during my
PhD at Durham between 2008 and 2012. I quickly discovered that I had a passion for teaching others and it was something that came naturally to me.
Through travelling, I became fascinated with the Earth and how it worked. Particularly mountains, volcanoes and earthquakes and climate, so I decided to take a degree in Geology. My undergraduate degree provided me with an excellent understanding of all aspects of science, including palaeontology (biology), geochemistry and geophysics. Later I went on to specialise in geochemistry for my PhD, studying volcanoes from across SE Asia.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach 4 subjects in total. Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths at GCSE; and Biology, Chemistry and Physics at A-Level. My specialist subject is Chemistry, as that, is the one I’m most passionate about and studied at the highest level.

I particularly enjoy teaching organic chemistry, as there is so much synergy between that and biology. For example, if you understand how certain organic compounds are formed and work you will develop a much greater understanding of biological systems; such as nutrition, hormones, genetics and respiration. I’ve found that often what you learn in one area of science can be applied in multiple other areas and gives you a greater depth of understanding.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Famous role models include the likes of Richard Feynman and Sigmund Freud. The former had an amazing ability to take complex topics and simplify them, which is not always an easy thing to do.

The teacher who had the greatest influence on me personally was my geochemistry lecturer. He was an extremely extroverted and eccentric guy (who would often be kept away on open days), wore jesus sandals all year round and sported a huge beard. As intimidating as he was, you could tell the passion he had for what he was teaching. He explained concepts through stories and helped develop my love for geochemistry. I’m not sure I would have gone on to do a PhD had it not been for his influence.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Being a great academic or teacher does not necessarily mean you’ll be a great tutor. A great tutor is also a coach and mentor to a student. Someone, who has the ability to empathise, inspire, set goals, and help organise a student to achieve their potential.

Tutoring is an art and a science. There are proven strategies for helping students achieve great results, but these can differ based on the individual goals, personality, ability and skill level That’s why coaching is such an important addition to teaching. Every student is unique and discovering that uniqueness is the key to getting great results. I have supported my academic knowledge by training in the fields of coaching and psychometric assessments to become a better tutor.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

At school, I was always told to follow my passion, which I believed to also be the thing which came more naturally to me. Back then, this was art. I could draw well. However, following A-Levels and a bunch of work experience days at graphic design companies, I realised that, this was not something that would directly translate into a career I wanted to pursue. Nor use much of the freehand drawing skills I had.

Following a few gap years, I decided to go back and study a science degree, which required me to take A-Levels in Chemistry, Maths and Physics. Believing I was not as good at these subjects, it took a long time for me to gain confidence in them, but once I did, I was able to reach the highest of levels and achievements in them. This taught me a valuable lesson to not think of myself as ‘good’ or ‘bad’
at something, but instead, focus on getting better at them over time. The creative side I naturally had as a kid is still very much being used every day in my tutoring.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

In addition to my PhD, I earned a 1st class Masters's degree and an award for academic excellence. It didn’t come easy though. I was always more creative than analytical by nature. In fact, my first A levels were all in art-based subjects.

In order to achieve the level I reached in science and maths, I had to discover strategies and techniques that worked well for me. That was the start of realising how important personal development and self-awareness are in education. I started tutoring and implementing this while at Durham and saw such great results that it became my profession.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I have multiple passions, such as sports and travelling. However, the one that complements my tutoring most, is psychometrics. I love to understand how people differ, particularly through their personalities and ability.

I actually took a summer training course at Cambridge University to study Psychometric assessments under Professor John Rust (a leading expert in the field) and have BPS and EFPA certificates for Occupational Test Use (COTU), Ability and Personality, Psychometrics and Quantitative Psychology. If I use these with my students, they often prefer something a little more fun, such as the 16 personalities test, which can still provide valuable insights into things such as whether they are likely to be organised or not, or whether they are likely to need more help managing anxiety.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P )?

For the following reasons in combination with each other, in no particular order:

    1. My record of achievement as a tutor (over 2,000 hours and 100 5* reviews on Tutorfair. Also voted as a top tutor on the platform in 2021)
    2. My academic record of achievement
    3. My experience of 10+ years as a tutor and academic coach
    4. My training in performance coaching and psychometric assessments
    5. My passion for what I do
    6. My understanding of technology and the most effective ways to deliver online lessons
    7. My vast resource library and knowing what resources to use for effective teaching
    8. My ability to organise, understand and empathise with my students, in addition to getting the best out of them
    9. My continuous personal development and desire to improve
    10. My relationship with my students and parents
