About Sarah
I am enthusiastic about sharing my love of art with others and have worked consistently building my own practice in conjunction with teaching.
Throughout my time as a student I enjoyed one to one teaching and teaching small groups of children to draw, paint and sculpt.
I currently teach on the BA and MA Fine Art at Edinburgh College of Art, Edinburgh University.. I have a Postgraduate Certificate in Education and I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
I have also taught on the Slade Summer School as a Teaching Assistant on the Drawing course and the 'Sculpture Quick Build' and have given talks on my work for the Slade Summer School, the Duveen Travel Prize and at Camberwell College of Arts.
Further to this I have worked part-time for sculptor Phyllida Barlow and I work freelance at the Fruitmarket Gallery running drawing and sculpting workshops related to their exhibitions, as part of Lothian Equal Access Programme for Schools. I have lectured and taught at Middlesborough Institute of Modern Art (MIMA), Teesside University and many other institutions.
I was one of two recipients of the Arts and Humanities Research Council Award on the MFA Painting at the Slade School of Fine Art, between 2012 and 2014. During this time, I was also awarded the first prize in a competition to create a permanent public mural for the Grant Museum of Zoology.
On graduating from the MFA Painting I was the sole awardee of the Duveen Travel Prize, which I spent travelling for six weeks in Russia and Outer Mongolia, visiting art schools in Moscow, studying 20,000 year old palimpsest cave paintings in Western Mongolia and painting outside in the Gobi desert while living with nomads. On return from Mongolia I started up the Zarakes Residency on the Greek island of Evia, in collaboration with artists from Evia and Athens and with contemporary performance workshops from Nadja Gura, PhD student at Surikov Moscow State Academy Art Institute.

As a family we value the opportunity for our child to engage in creative practices. Sarah has been providing one to one lessons for our child that have been very enriching.
She uses a variety of mediums, from charcoal drawings, abstract painting, collage and clay. Her classes are fun, focused and relaxed. I have noticed my daughter's creative skills improved by the way she observes things and how she experiments with her practice. Sarah is very patient, calm and attentive.
An essential as our schools are not making time for free creative processes and play with materials.View more recommendations
