About Sarah
Whilst I’ve undertaken Masters level classical violin training and am very happy teaching to a traditional classical syllabus, I also have a strong background in folk, pop and free improvisation and enjoy working on developing student’s own creative practice as well as technical abilities. One of the things I love about teaching is getting to know a wide variety of people with an equally wide set of interests, abilities and learning styles, and feel my flexibility to adapt lessons to the student’s needs is a noticeable strength in my teaching practice.
I have 15 years teaching experience, working for music services (Dudley and Birmingham), creative music projects (Soundlab Coventry, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group) and also work as an artist and art teacher delivering workshops to adults and children (Ardenleigh secure hospital, Anawim women's centre, community/public art projects) as well as freelance private tutoring. I have several years experience working with young people and adults with additional needs and really enjoy the creativity involved in tailoring lessons to individuals to best suit them.
I regularly perform in bands, (The Destroyers, Bonfire Radicals, The Innocent, Surge Orchestra) and as a free improvser. I also regularly work in theatre (including the RSC) and as a session musician and am keen to share practical knowledge with my students that will help them in joining ensembles/bands/performing outside lessons - a joyous part of music making!

I am a strong believer that there is no one size fits all for teaching - especially when students are learning extra curricular activities such as music. Lessons must be enjoyable and fulfil the aims of the students (are you looking to join an amateur orchestra? want to feel confident turning up to a folk session? want your child to progress through grade exams? want to explore new creative avenues and see where they lead?) and must also fit around other life committments realistically. I aim to equip students with the tools they need to grown their own creative and musical approach by helping students find the repertoire they connect with most and tailoring technical and aural work to best support this. Music can be immensley rewarding, but it can also be very challenging. One of my primary aims is to challenge students enough to progress and surprise themselves, but always staying aware of the student experience and enjoyment. My combined knowledge and experience of different styles of playing and teaching mean I can adapt lesson plans easily to different learners.

Sarah has been tutoring my now 10 year old son in violin for 4 years. She has always been professional, reliable, flexible and very approachable. Sarah is excellent at adapting her methods towards the child’s specific needs during any given lesson and has, on numerous occasions, had to come up with some very creative ways of engaging my son in the lesson. My son loves Sarah’s lessons, and I can’t recommend her highly enough!

Sarah has taught me the violin for 5 years. She is both inspiring and patient. She always seems to know away round any problems and keep me motivated. I really enjoy lessons with her. She is also extremely reliable and punctual. Sarah gives me confidence on the violin but never pushes me. I feel comfortable and relaxed with her which helps a lot with violin playing.
Sarah has been my violin teacher for 5 years now. She is fantastic. No matter how I am struggling with the instrument (and I do struggle) she seems to know a way to sort out the problem. I really look forward to our weekly lessons. I particularly enjoy our duets which help my timing such a lot. She has encouraged me to go out in public playing (Irish music at a pub and joining a string orchestra) which I would never have believed I could do. Sarah is extremely reliable and punctual also which is important to me. I highly recommend her as a violin teacher.
