About Samuele

I am an experienced private Tutor, Teacher and Lecturer of Economics with 10 years of Experience and more than 5,000 hours of tutoring and teaching. I obtained my Ph.D. in Economics after a Bachelor and two Masters in Economics, both obtained with honors.
I published Economics papers in top academic journals such as the Cambridge Journal of Economics.

A bit more about me, my experience and knowledge:

Hello!

My name is Samuele and I am an Economics and Maths teacher both at Sixth Form and at College level.

As an Economist, I have a strong knowledge of the subject thanks to my Bachelor in Business Economics and my Master in Economic Sciences (where I obtained the highest scores). Furthermore, I also got a Second Master and I am currently in my last phase of my PhD in Economics.

The reason why I started tutoring is my wish to help every student achieve a strong understanding and interest in these subjects. As a consequence, excellent results are achievable in a very efficient, effective and enjoyable way.

I previously lectured in different Universities in Latin America (Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola and Universidad de Piura, among the most prestigious Universities in Latin America).

I have been tutoring Economics and Maths for more than 15 years in different countries (e.g. with students of different nationalities, different background and different prior knowledge. I have teaching experience in both classrooms and on one-to-one basis.

Thanks to my extensive educational background and international teaching experience, I have helped many students understand the subjects better and to improve tests scores. For example, I have helped more than 50 students achieve A/A* grade in A-Level economics. Some of my previous students were also able to enter into top Universities such as Oxbridge and Russel group Universities.

Additionally, I have received positive feedback from directors and fellow educators alike for my abilities in the classroom.
Even when I was assigned to low performing classes, I was able to achieve a passing rate above 63%.

My approach:

“THERE'S NO SUCH A THING AS BAD LEARNER, JUST A BAD EQUIPMENT”

I strongly believe that bad learners do not exist. What does exist is bad equipment because of which many students struggle and go through failures and frustrations. In my opinion such a situation is not only a risk for the students academically but also a threat to the general self-esteem of the students.

My experience is that in schools and universities every teaching block is built upon previous ones, in a cumulative way. This means that students who do not solve their difficulties as soon as they face them easily feel “lost”, often unable to catch up with the syllabus and the speed of the lectures. Therefore, I believe that as a good tutor, my role is to help them address that divergences as soon as they arise so that they will not fall behind.

On top of that, very often students who fall behind lose their sense of motivation and this might completely block their potential development. Such a negative attitude might affect their level of confidence and their attitude to work and life in the future. I do strongly believe that this lost opportunity is never their fault and my role is to help them restore their self-esteem to increase their performances.

I am very well organised and I plan both with a long term structure based on the needs of the students and with more prompt daily lesson schemes. Such combination helps both me and the students to know what we are exactly going to cover, what are the questions they would like to answer and, more generally, how and when to tackle the most difficult topics they face. I develop highly effective lesson plans and performance assessments.

I am a DBS certified tutor.

Through the proper support and equipment, every student can improve and achieve his/her potential and I fully commit myself in providing that support for every student and tutee.

Thank you for considering me.

I really hope to hear from you soon.

Samuele

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I started being interested in Economics in high school and then during the first years of my Bachelor's.
However, it was only during my first Master's, travelling and living internationally and finally deepening my knowledge even further through my PhD studies that I finally became enthusiastic about economics.
I always liked helping peers and friends on the topics I liked and was passionate about. I enjoyed that particularly because I saw that my explanations were effective in helping them understand the topics and the subject more and ultimately, to help them improve their school and academic grades too. That way, I started being a tutor already in my high school and I never stopped since then.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I do teach economics, in practically every aspect of it, microeconomics, macroeconomics and international economics. During the last decade, I have specialized in tutoring A-level economics students.
Personally, I enjoy the challenge of translating and transmitting even the most difficult concepts of economics into ways and examples that are accessible to anyone, that way spreading the possibility to really discuss and engage in critical debate. Also, I like to prepare students to be critical of every theory, every model, every tool and every tool they use in making their own argument. To be critical is a skill not only necessary and required from the examiners in the moment of reading their work (I have been an economics A-level examiner myself and I know that!) but it is also extremely important in being aware of the strengths and limits of our own arguments as economists (and, overall, citizens).
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Many of my A-level economics teachers and some of my university professors too.
If I should point at a model in economics depth analysis (and his critical skill) of these days, I would think of Ha-Joon Chang.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Empathy: every student (and every person) has his/her own difficulties and struggles and many of them are built on cumulated weaknesses. It's important to understand them and be supportive with the students building and strengthening those weaknesses.
Charismatic and passionate: it is important to be passionate about a subject and topics we do deeply care about and be able to share that passion through a charismatic approach, engaging and empowering students more and more.
Planning, Strategy, Patience and Constance: all the previous require not only good pedagogic skills but also planning and strategic skills to plan ahead the lessons and the topics to be proposed and to work on. Patience and Constance are that way vital.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

When I entered one of the recent A-level colleges I was teaching I was able to increase by 300% the number of economics students with A-level in just 2 years. I brought them to LSE talks, they engaged into new topics and finally, many of them became so enthusiastic that they decided to apply (and enter) top Russel Group Universities.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Economics is such an infinite, complicated and never-ending subject and it is so because it's based on (hopefully changing) humans.
Despite I devoted all my life to economics (BSc, 2 MSc, PhD, PGCE, FHEA) etc, it is always such a difficult subject also because it is linked to the socio-political aspect every country faces.
However, that is also the beauty of it. It's never boring but always interesting to dig more and more into such a challenging world!
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

In general, I enjoy teaching everything I know, economics, chess, languages and so on. However, since I devoted all my life to economics, I have devoted more time and effort in being a tutor of economics.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions)?

I think my passion, my long, international and cross-sector real-life experience and my deep academic knowledge.
To have studied economics few years in University is not enough anymore. The world is challenging fast and to engage in up-to-date topics, development and discussions, you need to continue studying and being involved in research all the time. Only that way, you can really give deep and good explanations on topics difficult and constantly changing.
