About Samuel
Whether you are aiming to be the next Matisse or simply looking for something fun, individuals of all ages and abilities now have the opportunity make and study with artist Sam Petherbridge and delve further into the world of art. Tailored to each individual’s level and ability, Sam teaches a mixture of observational and figurative drawing with a strong focus on craft and testing the capability of material. Closer to his own practice, he additionally offers advance teachings in collage, bookbinding and weaving, if this is something you wish to learn. The materials you will begin learning to work with are pencil, charcoal, oil and dry pastels, watercolour, acrylic, oils, clay and wire. Once a relationship is built with these materials, the sessions will focus on evolving a more personal practice for the individual.
“An arts education should be accessible to everyone as it offers us time to slow down, observe and think. Over time Art has challenged us to record our expression and has given us new ways to communicate. Personally, it has helped me to develop my self-confidence, expression and a drive to create. Seeing the arts being marginalised within the education system despite the positive impact they make, is the reason I am now compelled to give lessons to children, in spaces around South London, where I grew up.” – Sam Petherbridge
Art became a major inspiration for Sam Petherbridge when taking lessons with painter, Tricia Gillman, where he was taught a variety of basic techniques like collage, drawing and painting. Since then he has aimed to work within a number of areas in the arts, to gain the knowledge needed to be a well rounded artist. He has assisted artists such as Jeremy Deller, Royal Academician Printmaker Eileen Cooper and New Sensations Saatchi Prize Winner Jonny Briggs. He was also one of a few founders of Art Collectives Endmor and Art Matter; exhibiting around London, at spaces like Art le Cuna and Tower Bridge, in the hope to provide a platform for young artists like himself. He is also currently teaching at Chelsea Fine Arts and offers private tuition in all areas of art. This experience continues to cement his interest in supporting the Arts in addition to his on-going practice.
