About Sammi-Jo
I am a qualified Maths teacher in a School in Derby, so I have in depth experience in the pedagogy of teaching and the GCSE curriculum.
I have day-to-day experience with identifying misconceptions and building a students confidence in Maths. Within this, I also have experience holding study support sessions, and intervention sessions, which are one to one and small group sessions aimed at improving specific areas of Maths that have been identified as a priority.
I can confidently assess progress and make decisions as to what needs attention next.
On top of my teaching experience, I have been doing private tuition for 7 years, starting after I completed my A Levels.

The main thing I encourage in my students is having confidence in their own abilities, anxiety about maths is something that is very common among children and adults alike, so I focus on having a growth mindset and progress. I do this through praise about what they can do and using productive language when they reach something they can't yet do. Voicing misconceptions allows us to have a discussion about what it is that makes us think that. The deeper learning comes from not being afraid to make mistakes, and I aim to encourage this.
I believe that everyone can do maths, and I focus on concept rather than process to enable skills to be transferable to other areas of maths.
It is important to have solid knowledge in the "basics" of maths, so everything else can build on top of it, this is what I like to initially focus on.
I like to focus on problem solving techniques and exam technique where possible. These key areas are often overlooked but are fundamental in reaching your potential during an exam.
A typical lesson will have a retrieval task at the beginning, either something from a previous session, an exam question, or some basic skills.
It will then cover the sessions topic, working through misconceptions if they arise with some independent practice.
The session will typically end with a consolidation task, bringing their learning together, with a self assessment by the student to ensure they are aware of the learning they have made and what learning needs to take place next time.
