About Sam
I have been a private tutor since 2015, when I graduated with a BA in English Literature from the University of Cambridge. Over the past four years, I have helped students prepare for 11+ exams, GCSEs, A-Levels, the IB Diploma and university admissions exams and interviews.
In my final year of university, I taught Practical Criticism and Literary Theory to first-year undergraduates: a challenging course that requires the development and synthesis of complex ideas. Prior to this, I tutored AS-Level and KS3 Drama, and KS3 English.
Modernist poetry, literary theory, and the theatre of Early Modern England are my academic specialties. I tutor English and Theatre Studies at all levels, Spanish to A-level, and Maths to GCSE. I also love helping my students prepare for the demands of university admissions tests and interviews.
I am currently studying at L'École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq in Paris. My work as a freelance theatre director also gives me first-hand experience of the ways in which a literary text can be brought alive through performance.
I also hold a Free Standing Mathematics Qualification (FSMQ), which introduces students to the elegance and power of advanced mathematics. The course examines equivalent material to the first modules of A-Level Maths.
I produce bespoke lesson plans and resources to ensure that the unique needs of each student are met. I aim to create a challenging but inspiring environment by blending goal-focussed activities with enriching discussions. This nurtures each student’s creativity and critical awareness while giving them the confidence to express their own perspectives on literature. I find it a joy to support students as they develop unique and invaluable ideas.
I have extensive experience working with children with special educational needs and can teach students with learning difficulties in a manner that is effective and exciting. The strategies that I have devised for these students are beneficial even for those without special educational needs.
I'm currently offering group sessions and classes for 50% of my usual rate for each student.

Subject : EnglishPerfect! A lovely and amazing tutor, no doubt!
Sam has helped and supported me massively over the past year in both my English literature and English language GCSEs. I was to be assessed under the new 9-1 GCSE grading system and was quite nervous about my grades, hoping for at least a 6 in Lit and maybe a 7 in Lang as the grading system is new and said to be harder compared to the old GCSEs. I was also predicted a 6 for English Literature and a 7 for English language after my mocks in December in Year 11.
However, when I received my GCSE grades I was completely thrown away! I received a grade 9 distinction for English language and a grade 7 for English literature, 2 grades higher than what I was expecting!
Sam's style of teaching is different compared to other tutors. It is unique in its own right. English was my weakest subject and even though this was the case, Sam would still make his lessons engaging. He made me think outside the box and asked questions, at a much higher level which allowed me to express my own ideas in an elegant way, rather than memorising a text book GCSE answer. He went through my work and critically pointed out anything that was missing in my answers. Moreover, Sam regularly corrected any exam questions that I had answered for HW and took the time out of his busy schedule to create his own exam papers for me. He would also keep motivating me, telling me that I would get much better grades, than what I expected.
Lastly, Sam is a friendly, approachable and great person to know and I would recommend him to anyone who would like to improve their grades in English at any level. An excellent tutor after all!
