About Sam
My name is Sam, I'm an English teacher and tutor with ten years of tutoring experience. I've taught and tutored in a wide variety of settings including universities, private colleges, and private sessions.
I started tutoring in 2004 when I was completing my undergraduate degree at the University of Sydney. I have a taught both English literature (IB, GCSE, A-Levels, HSC) and English Language (undergraduate, professional, IELTS). I speak French fluently and also offer sessions in French language and literature. I have worked with a wide range of age groups: from children as young as two to professionals. I have significant experience in preparing students for competitive exams.
My experiences have led me to believe that the main goal of tutoring should be to understand the specific needs of the student, whether this is to refine already well-developed skills or to build confidence. Personalisation is something that an experienced tutor can offer and classrooms can sometimes struggle to provide. Accordingly, my approach varies with students' needs. For students preparing for exams I offer sessions focusing on essential skills such as essay writing, efficient study technique, and understanding the requirements of the syllabus. For those looking to broaden their reading, especially younger students, I attempt to use my knowledge of and passion for the subject to inspire learning and to develop critical thinking skills.
Whatever the level, stage, and goal of the student, I attempt to understand, challenge, and enable. My diverse background and extensive experience equips me to understand the needs of students and help design personalised sessions that address their concerns. All students have different needs and an experienced tutor can adapt, guide, encourage, and ultimately produce excellent results.
In the last five years, I've developed an English Literature program with two leading private colleges as well as specially tailored IB English program with an International School in Paris. I'm currently completing a Ph.D. In English Literature at King's College London in coordination with the University of Sydney. My background means that I have sound knowledge of the canon, an ability to understand and communicate the major movements in literary theory as well as English language scholarship. (If you're interested in my C.V. I'm very happy to send it through to you).
Former students and teaching colleagues have praised my attention to detail, my outgoing nature, my knowledge, and the interesting approach I take to subject material. I always try to share my passion for literature with my students. (My other passions are food, music, and fish, and I've been very lucky to have done a fair amount of travelling).
Whether you are studying for an exam, looking to develop a passion for literature, or hoping to improve your English language skills I can propose something that works for you. (My hours and rates also can also vary a little according to the needs of the client). If you have a question don't hesitate to get in touch! Hope to hear from you soon!

Sam worked with our son over an 18 month period and helped him understand what would be required of him in his exams, encouraged him to believe in his own ideas and be able to articulate them. His friendly approach meant our son looked forward to his coaching sessions. Sam also had a way of firmly reminding our son that effort was needed by him that was accepted and acted on. As a parent, Sam was able to provide valuable feedback on our son's progress and were very happy that we engaged Sam. He is an excellent tutor.
Sam has been tutoring my daughter in English as she prepares for her final school exams. She had been struggling with her analysis and writing capabilities and was losing more confidence with each assessment or exam. Sam tutored her every week for the last year - initially face to face and then over skype and with email exchanges of work and feedback. Sam's tutoring methods have been focused on coaching - my daughter submits her writing exercises and he provides marked up feedback and commentary, they discuss changes required and then she refines and resubmits. He is patient and measured, this has been an enabler, and provides an environment that is supportive rather than judgmental.
I have known Sam personally and professionally for many years and his keen intelligence, open character, and dedication to his passion for English are clear.
I employed Sam as an English teacher at Matrix Education in 2013 and recommend him highly as a tutor in English language and literature.
Sam's open and cheerful demeanour ensured his popularity with students. Sam has years of experience working closely with students in a classroom environment and marking assessment tasks. As a tutor, Sam's light-hearted tone and welcoming nature enables students to develop their confidence in the subject with a sense of fearlessness. Sam’s enthusiasm encourages students to engage with the subject themselves.
Sam has been consistently praised by former students for his interesting approach to English, and the skills students developed under his supervision is a testament to the success of his approach.
I would highly recommend Sam as a tutor who possesses not only a thorough grounding in English literature, but is also well-versed in French literature.Sam was an extremely knowledgeable English tutor. He was always prompt and well prepared for each week. My sons found Sam very easy to talk to and their grades improved considerably from his tutoring. I have no hesitation in recommending Sam as an English tutor.
