Physics graduate and teacher

I am a Physics graduate graduate and teacher with approximately 1 year of experience in state grammar and independent schools and over 6 months and counting of experience as a supply teacher in primary and secondary schools. Furthermore, I have over 6 months experience of being a Maths & Physics and GCSE Science tutor. I have a strong desire to enter an education environment where I can make a real difference to students' lives. I feel I have a lot of skills (from both the academic and professional side) and knowledge to offer students, and get a great pleasure and real excitement from helping students in anyway I can in their studies to achieve their maximum potential. Lastly, being a personable, friendly and approachable character, and having a smile on my face always helps greatly with the progress of my students.

My tutoring approach revolves around giving students the most bespoke package possible, to allow them to maximise their potential. My approach is multifaceted and contains the following:
1. Initially assessing students for their key needs in the subject, and then establishing realistic, moveable targets and milestones with the students, so that the student can have clear goals in mind.

2. Explaining in detail, systematically, the principles to students, building on what he/she already knows, using real-world examples and applications to the students’ own interests, while using staggered questioning and individual practice time to encourage students to think for themselves.

3. Producing hand-written/typed collaborative notes for students to take away from at the end of the lesson.

4. Lessons will be fully flexible and organic to take into account students’ ever-changing needs in a subject and students can bring questions in from school that will be answered in as much detail as necessary etc.

5. Tackling misconceptions/personal barriers to learning head-on and giving students the confidence and freedom and opportunity to ask questions all the time, to deepen their understanding, no matter how simple the question may appear to be. This would be in an environment with no external pressures, with myself dedicating as much time as necessary to allow the concept to be consolidated securely, and the student knowing they will get a firm answer.

6. Using problem-solving exercises and practice exam papers to develop core skills that will lay foundations for a deep and lasting understanding of the subject, while also being able to transfer those skills in a multitude of different circumstances.

7. Issuing homework regularly to check the students’ understanding and technique and perfect and refine it.

Being a qualified teacher, I value greatly and take a huge amount of pride from maximising the potential of students through individualised learning, so that they can reach their goals.

Maths tutor - Sam Cuthbertson

Sam gave my daughter Ellie extra tuition for Maths leading up to her GCSE. He is an excellent teacher and taught Ellie aspects that she had not covered in class which definately helped her in the exam. He has a calming and methodical approach and I would definately recommend him.

Outcome:
Ellie would not have achieved the grade that she did without Sam's expertise.

Inspirational tutor

My son struggled to understand some topics in his AS Physics, particularly electricity and mechanics. Apart from imparting sound basic knowledge Sam was able to grow my son's confidence in the subject resulting in a B grade, 1 mark off an A, in his exam. Sam is an truly caring, excellent teacher and I would have no hesitation in recommending him to anyone that wishes to improve their comprehension and results in a short space of time.

AS Physics - B grade, 1 mark off an A, in his exam (under challenge for an A)

Lifesaver

Sam helped me with my AS maths which to start with was my weakest subject but with some help it became one of my stronger ones. He helps you work each question out yourself rather than just telling you the answer which meant I could tackle similar questions on my own. He is incredibly patient and I thoroughly enjoyed each lesson as my mathematical ability grew. I've had many different tutors on bigfoot and Sam was definitely the most helpful!
Subject:
Maths
Outcome:
Managed to ace my AS maths exams.
