About Ryan
Accepting New Students September 2022
I am taking on new students for the 2022-2023 school year. I only have a few places left, and many of my students remain with me for the duration of their two-year A Level course. I can only take on a few new students every year as I also work full-time as the Economics subject lead at a large Ofsted-outstanding Further Education college. Please contact me if you are interested in Economics or Business Studies tuition.
I am an experienced tutor with over 200 hours on this site and thousands of hours in the classroom. My students consistently value their time with me, and my method gets results. All of my lessons with students are typed as we talk and sent out immediately following the lesson, so students don't have to worry about taking notes.
As my student you will have the option to have a free account to my A Level Economics Virtual Learning Environment, ThinkEconomics.co.uk. This is a custom-built application designed to help students understand the material, packed with hundreds of multiple choice questions from all the main exam boards. See (concealed information) for more details.
Best, Ryan

Full Bio:
I graduated from Harvard University with BSc in Economics (cum laude in field).
I'm an A Level Economics and Business Studies teacher with over 16 years' classroom and tutoring experience. I'm really passionate about making sure that my students learn these subjects in fun and interesting ways. I have also have many years' experience as an examiner for several of the major A Level Economics and Business Studies exam boards, so I have experience making sure my students know exactly how to craft their answers to ensure maximum marks. I have a proven track record in delivering results, with many of my former students achieving A* in these examinations.
When teaching as a tutor in a 1:1 setting I can adapt my teaching methods to best suit the needs of my students. After our first meeting I will put together a weekly plan for the types of topics that my student wants to cover and the work they can do between sessions. During tutor sessions I keep detailed notes of what we do in the lesson and then immediately email this to the student after the lesson. My students therefore will have a detailed set of notes to revise from and can spend the lesson concentrating on developing concepts and exam technique.
I believe that students learn best by having relevant and interesting real-world examples, and I love talking about how Economics and Business Studies relates to current events. Over the years I have developed ways of explaining difficult concepts that makes sense to people learning for the first time. I have an extensive back-catalogue of news articles and analysis pieces that fit to every part of the Economics and Business Studies specifications, which we can read and discuss as part of our sessions. For the most part I just love chatting about Economics- so this is a real dream job for me.
I work professionally as a teacher, leading the Economics curriculum at an Ofsted Outstanding FE College, with full DBS checks and QTS. I also have worked as an examiner in Business Studies and Economics for AQA, OCR, and Eduqas (WJEC). I have experience working in management positions within education, mentoring other teachers as they begin their teaching career.
I studied Economics at Harvard University, where I graduated cum laude in field.

My lessons put the students first to make sure you reach maximum potential in the subject.
All lessons take place online. My standard format is to begin with a discussion of what the student hopes to achieve, and we draw out a plan for future lessons.
As we discuss lesson material, I type our notes into a word document which we discuss via screen share. Immediately following the lesson, I send this notes document to the student (cc parents/carers) so that students have a comprehensive set of notes on all parts of the specification they want help on.
I also have a purpose-built A Level Economics learning platform- check it out at (concealed information) All my students have free access to a profile on this site. This is then used to set homework assignments between lessons- usually involving a database of hundreds of multiple-choice questions taken from all the major examination boards.
I have a comprehensive database of news articles that relate to A Level Economics, which are useful for those students hoping to extend their knowledge of the subject.

Perfect! A Level Economics
Ryan was always punctual and encouraging, fitting us in for lessons even at short notice.
Lessons were focused on the A Level syllabus and exam questions but in a relaxed, discursive environment. Examples were drawn from everyday news making them interesting too. I would highly recommend Ryan for A Level Economics teaching.

Good resources and website as well as good teaching style . Would highly recommend
Very proficient, very organized tutor. Added considerable value to my teenager's studies. Five star rating !
Ryan has been my tutor for A-Level economics. He has been extremely helpful. Ryan always knows how to best approach an exam question, and develop paragraphs in detail. We mainly work through essays, correcting, improving, and evaluating the essays I have written. Whenever we go through theory, Ryan explains it very well and simply, I have always understood, especially the more complicated stuff, for example, the transmission mechanism. Ryan also usually reccomends further reading materials on the topic we study, for example articles from the economist and fancy websites where you can gather economic data. I would definitely recommend Ryan to any student, he's an amazing tutor.
Very relaxed tutor, helped me nail my theory as well as joining in with intellectual conversations about theory in the real world (key for A level Economics). Highly recommend.
Ryan Hughes was my Secondary School teacher for Business Studies (GCSE & A-Level) & Economics (A-Level). Ryan is a personable, driven and dedicated teacher who leverages a professional yet personable approach to teaching to engage with his students and drive academic performance.
Ryan never takes a one-size-fits-all attitude to teaching. Ryan understands each student learns differently, requiring a fluid, dynamic and patient approach to lessons and lesson planning. This not only keeps lessons interesting by offering lots of variety, but also means students are taught one concept or theory from various angles to help with building a holistic picture and cementing understanding.
Ryan uses a combination of exam based activities and debates to understand the weaknesses and strengths of his students and proactively adjusts his lessons plans to plug gaps in understanding. Both Economics & Business have lots of interdependent theories and concepts which interlink to form complex arguments when in exam situations. On the surface, concepts such as the Circular Flow of Income, Fiscal Policy, Game Theory and Monetary Policy can be difficult to understand and relate to. Ryan uses real world concepts to help students understand the real world significance of these concepts by showcasing famous economic best practices (Tax & Subsides) and international blunders (2008 Financial Crash).
I am dyslexic and although I have a good ability to grab 'big picture' concepts quickly, I often miss granular detail and my answers lacked a logical structure. Ryan understood this issue and ensured he spent extra time with me and gave me exercises to build upon my weaknesses to make sure I was exam ready.Ryan taught me Economics and Business Studies at A-level. Over two years, Ryan was enthusiastic and highly knowledgeable - allowing me to develop my knowledge, and more importantly, passion for these subjects. Ryan is able to explain complex concepts with clarity, which helped me understand the important theories and concepts within these subjects. Ryan spared a great deal of time to help with any questions - and took great care and patience to ensure that I always understood the answer. Crucially for me, Ryan taught me how to think logically about these subjects - a skill that continued to benefit me studying Economics at university.
Ryan tutored me during the final year of my A Levels, as I studied for both my Economics A Level and AS Level resit exams. Ryan devised an extremely well-structured approach to my tuition sessions, which effectively ensured that we worked together to improve both my conceptual understanding of the subject as well as my exam technique. Ryan went the extra mile to ensure that I got the most out of each session, by using a range of engaging teaching materials and regularly evaluating the areas in which I was making greater progress, as well as the subject areas that I felt I required more attention, in order to update our tuition schedule. As well as Ryan's ability to make my tuition sessions engaging, and improve both my technical understanding of the subject and my exam technique, his personable and patient manner helped my confidence to develop, and played a crucial role in my achievement of A grades in both my AS and A Level Economics exams.
