About Ruth
I'm Ruth and I have been working with children aged 3 - 11 for over 22 years in a variety of settings.
I am firm believer in education. Through my experience as a qualified teacher, I have found that children work at different paces and need different approaches in order to understand and achieve. I also know this as I was one of those students!
Academia never came naturally to me and during my school years I struggled immensely with the work. I left the education system believing I could never go to University as that was for 'intelligent' people. It wasn't until I started working as a Teaching Assistant that I met colleagues who encouraged me to get my Teaching degree. I went to university and discovered how much I enjoyed learning. Children need to find that love of learning much sooner.
My passion is building relationships with children in order to provide a learning environment in which they can thrive.
My teaching style has it's roots in Vygotskys Zone of Proximal Development theory (That children can learn through independent problem solving). Additionally, my approach supports Bruner's Scaffolding theory (That children need support to grasp new concepts and as they grow in confidence and ability that support is gradually reduced).

Ruth really helped my daughter (9) who was struggling with English at school. Ruth brought her reading level up and was able to build on a very basic foundation of different writing styles. English is now one of her favorite subjects even her spellings have improved! This is such a turn around as before Ruth came to us English homework was a battle. Lots of tears and frustration.
She also knows just how to pitch sessions at the right level. I would highly recommend her.Ruth was appointed as a class teacher at World’s End Junior School on January 1st, 2020 and left our employment on May 31st, 2022. Ruth taught in year 5, she also led computing across the school.
Ruth is a conscientious and committed teacher, with a passion for teaching and learning, the quality of her teaching was consistently good. During her time at World’s End Junior School, Ruth developed her expertise in planning and assessment, playing a key role in the Year 5 team. Ruth has high expectations and aspirations for all of her pupils to achieve their very best and is committed to ensuring they do this, for example she ran a ‘booster club’ after school to help pupils to ‘catch-up’ on missed learning. Ruth has worked with several outside agencies, including social workers and the support team for the hard of hearing and has worked collaboratively with the Visual Impaired Resource Base, adapting resources to ensure Visually Impaired pupils can access the full curriculum.
Ruth was also our computing leader, which is an area of the curriculum she has a passion and aptitude for. Ruth adapted medium term plans for years 3 to 6, identifying the sequence of key learning and the progression of knowledge and skills. Ruth also delivered high quality CPD to the teaching staff on computing and has given up much of her own time to organise, log and audit our school Chrome Books. Ruth also ran a computing magazine club, which has been very popular with pupils.
Ruth formed very positive and professional relationships with colleagues, pupils and parents alike and has always been willing to go that extra mile for the benefit of the pupils and our school. Ruth was very adaptable and flexible during lockdown doing whatever was needed, for example, drawing up a timetable of activities in the first lockdown for the key worker and vulnerable children and running this; organising and clearing stock cupboards and teaching the key worker and vulnerable children in the second lockdown. Ruth was proactive in ensuring that the online learning was effective through gathering information from parents and producing a report for the SLT team. This showed us areas we could improve on and what was going well.
Ruth has excellent communication skills and a very good sense of humour. It has been a pleasure to work with Ruth, she has much to offer the profession and will be an asset to any school team.
There are no safeguarding concerns in relation to Ruth Lawrence.
Yours Sincerely,
Allison Owens

World’s End Junior SchoolRuth is a strong teacher; she has 5 years of teaching experience as well as 7 years’ experience as Teaching assistant before she qualified. Ruth is a friendly character who builds children up through encouragement and praise. She has the right balance of gently challenging children and offering support when they need it.
She is extremely organised and this has been seen in her planning and preparation for lessons, report writing and marking. She thrives on interacting with children through building strong relationships and planning engaging lessons, making them as child led as possible.
The years Ruth has spent working with children of all ages has given her a solid understanding of how children learn at all ages.
Overall, Ruth is efficient, knowledgeable, reliable, trustworthy and punctual. She would be a excellent addition the tutoring profession.View more recommendations
