I'm Richard, and I'm a professional tutor. I have taught piano, composition and theory to students of all ages, and have seen them flourish into all round musicians. I have taught over 1,500 face to face lessons in English to Japanese speakers in Tokyo, and subsequently to other students online. In these lessons I have taught both to the precise specifications of the syllabus, and in a way that develops curiosity for the subject, English or Music, in general.
I am a composer by training, having received a First Class Honours in composition from the Royal Academy of Music, and I run a contemporary music ensemble, Ensemble x.y, for whom I compose music and organise concerts and recordings. The process of rehearsing and working with musicians, dancers and filmmakers, and facilitating understanding between them has made me a relaxed and effective communicator of musical ideas and concepts more generally.
I enjoy reading widely, particularly contemporary poetry and contemporary philosophy, and spend much of my free time discussing these ideas with my friends - all of which contributes to a clarity of thought in communication.
I know you will enjoy learning with me, and I look forward to meeting you.
