Lessons are delivered online, via Skype or Zoom. The format will usually be based around presentations, with discussions on the topic and assessment questions to ensure the content has been understood.

Lessons are usually an hour long, but can be longer if required.

I have over 300 hours experience tutoring students aged from 6 to 60. Providing training has also been an integral part of my employment over the last 30 years, and I have also presented lectures at university and academic conferences.

I usually teach GCSE, 11+ and 13+

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I'm a bit of a sponge for knowledge and have always been interested in a wide range of subjects. I teach various subjects and have always enjoyed computing, maths and physics. However, as I'm especially passionate about the environment, geography is probably my favourite subject nowadays. It's so varied and fascinating to learn about so many aspects of the natural and human worlds, and how they interact.

Training staff members has always been a fairly integral part of my job over the years. During my time at university, I really enjoyed giving presentations, lectures and working as a class demonstrator, then subsequently branched out into private tutoring during lockdown and have found it extremely rewarding.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

Geography is more relevant than ever for understanding key issues such as climate change, resource availability and globalisation. Its interdisciplinary nature encompasses lots of different and interesting topics; weather, ecosystems, earthquakes, energy production, transport and sustainability to name but a few. Geography is especially good for having conversations with students and I generally prefer lessons to be interactive so that students aren't just listening to me talk. I will always try to lead students to the correct answer through discussion, rather than telling them what it is.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Studying with the Open University for my undergraduate degree while working a full-time job wasn't always easy. You need to be very self-disciplined and highly motivated, especially as it was mostly self-study and you can sometimes feel a bit isolated. Luckily, all my tutors were really helpful, supportive and always took the time to talk me through problems or questions. They showed me how much difference it can make when you have a great tutor and inspired me to be the same.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Patience, enthusiasm and the ability to convey your subject in a fun, interesting and understandable way using relatable examples.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

When starting my first degree, I thought choosing subjects I was familiar with would be the quickest route to progress. I picked a foundation course in technology, expecting it to be mostly about computing; however, it actually covered a wide range of other subjects; housing, agriculture, resource management and energy production. It sparked my interest in so many new areas and taught me that being passionate about your subject can be more important than following the easiest path.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

There was no internet or digital images when I was at school, and later during my first degree. You had to rely on finding all your information in the library or text books, so it could be really hard to find specific sources and references or to read around your subject. If I wanted to include pictures in my assignments, I had to leave gaps in the text, stick photocopies of the images in the gaps with tape, and then copy them together. It taught me to be inventive, but it's so much easier nowadays thankfully.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Seeing your student make progress is always rewarding, but especially so when you get a 'light-bulb' breakthrough moment and you're able to help them understand a particularly difficult topic or concept they have previously been struggling with. Learning is great, but being able to pass that knowledge on to others is even better!
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

A prospective student once told me that she really appreciated me telling her that I didn't think I was the best fit for what she wanted to learn, and that many tutors would have accepted the lesson anyway. I will always put a student's interests first, even if that means turning down work.
