About Richard

Digital Audio / Media Production Tutor (Ableton Live)

I am a teacher / digital media creative with over 15 years digital audio, radio, and production experience spanning radio, university and college lecturing in Sydney, Berlin and London.

After graduating from Knox Grammar School in Sydney with a Tertiary Entrance Ranking of 97.97% I undertook at Communications Degree at the University of Sydney, majoring in Advanced Sound Design and Media Arts, which was conferred in 1998, after which I commenced a career in electronic media production and performance which continues to date...

I have taught Ableton Live (as a production and live performance tool) and music philosophy at Sydney University, SAE College, University of Technology (where I was recently nominated for an Alumni Award), and taught weekly diploma classes at the Australian Institute of Music.

Previously I have produced and toured extensively across Europe and North America, and have held 3 US "Exceptional Ability" visas, as well as German and UK freelance visas.

I have written references on request from university, festival and academic engagements.

My original work has been featured in The Guardian, Rolling Stone, Billboard Magazine, The Wire and more, and I have been interviewed on radio, television and online for my work. Additionally, I have produced tutorial courses for MacProVideo and regularly create audio tools and resources for Sample Magic in the UK.

More recently, I have been a guest lecturer and performer (as "Acharné" and "Deepchild") at Berlin's auspicious Ableton Loop Conference, and The Wired Next Generation in London, with the team from Future DJs.

I am passionate about Ableton Live audio production, with a strong focus on composition strategy for students with learning disabilities, as well as advanced diploma students. Formerly in Sydney, I helped develop curriculum material at the Australian Institute of Music and Sydney Institute (TAFE).

I have been contributed academic work and research to several PhD student papers and academic journals, and continue this work in the UK.

Bespoke class notes, exercises etc all available on request.

I currently teach Ableton Live based audio production and composition, as well as the Adobe Creative Suite where requested.

Fundamentally, I am deeply invested in music education as a mode of creative and social reform and empowerment, particularly for those who are marginalised.

Empathic and erudite, considerate and articulate, he is an ideal communicator for learners of all backgrounds and skill levels. I cannot recommend him more highly as a tutor.

Exceptionally competent tutor

Written by Austen S
Richard sets the bar for all of our tutors nationwide when it comes to music production and teaching young students. His knowledge never fails to amaze us, although with the real world experience he has built up this should come as no surprise. What a wonderful tutor!
