About Rachel

My university career began with me completing an MA in Mediaeval History and Philosophy at the University of St. Andrews and subsequently going on to receive an MLitt in Philosophy also from St. Andrews.

*Acting and Singing*

While at university I got into singing and acting and decided to become a professional. I completed an MA in Musical Theatre at the RSAMD in Glasgow (now RCS.) in 2010.

Since then I have performed in all kinds of settings in a variety of styles. I have a good deal of experience in function bands, and have sung contemporary pop, rock and jazz on a cruise ship. I have also sung with the Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company, and won ‘Best Female Performer’ at the International Gilbert and Sullivan festival in 2014 for my portrayal of Mercury in THESPIS. For the last five years I have worked in an internationally touring company travelling to Germany, Israel, China and Japan playing Ophelia in Hamlet, Miranda/Ariel in The Tempest and, in 2017, Viola in Twelfth Night. These were actor musician roles where I also had to sing and play the violin. Right now I am singing the lead role of the queen at the Medieval Banquet in St Katherine Docks.

My recent professional credits include:
Viola, TWELFTH NIGHT (Actor, music captain, international tour)
Yum Yum, THE MIKADO (Singer also director)
The Queen, THE MEDIEVAL BANQUET (Singer) (CURRENT)
Miranda, THE TEMPEST (Actor, music captain, international tour)
Phyllis, IOLANTHE (Singer, also artistic Director)
Ophelia, HAMLET (Actor, Musical Director, International tour)

I also have my own theatre company where I direct and perform. In my (little!) spare time I enjoy reading, writing, and ballet and tap dancing.

Considering my extensive experience, my skills lie in teaching actors how to improve their singing and helping singers with their acting through song. I also work as a casting director for an internationally touring company and can help with monologues and audition prep. Having been often on both sides of the desk I know exactly what casting directors are looking for.

When it comes to younger people who want to get a good start in singing or acting, I would recommend getting a solid classical foundation in both and working from there. I can teach you the fundamental set up to a classical sound and work on all the different ways we can use our voices safely. I also want to hear how you act through song and tell a story. I can help with singing and acting (LAMDA) exams as well.

Please be aware that I am not an accomplished pianist. I will have a go, but I’d rather concentrate on you. Most things have backing tracks on YouTube which are very useful.

*Philosophy, Religious Studies/Education and History*

I have been tutoring these subjects for 4 years in total. I have previously completed an MA and an MLitt at the University of St. Andrews in Mediaeval History and Philosophy, and went on to complete an MA in Musical Theatre Performance from the RSAMD (now RCS). Being an actress and singer who performs almost nightly, I approach tutoring in a very lively theatrical way, but am also incredibly academically focused, and History and Philosophy have always been a passion of mine and will continue to be for the rest of my life. I have a considerable amount of experience in helping students improve their essay writing skills showing them not only how to use the facts they have learned to form a well-structured argument, but to encourage them to do so in an engaging way which will stand out to the examiner. The skills I equip my students with: rational argument, structure, logic and so forth, will not only be of use to them in their exams and coursework, but perhaps also in their other subjects, and even in their future lives and careers. There are time-constraints in schools and students do not often learn good essay technique until university. My help should put them ahead of the pack.

As well as essay technique, I am particularly skilled in explaining rather difficult philosophical concepts to students who, perhaps, did not understand the topic at school, or would like to increase their understanding of this material. Topics on the philosophy of religion and Ethics are particular specialities of mine especially the morals of Kant, which are incredibly difficult to fully grasp at High School or College level, but which always seem to find their way onto A-Level courses! No matter what level you are at with regards to mastering the material, the tutoring I provide will go beyond what is offered at schools.

If you are in a huge rush to cram your mind full of as much information as you can and want me to attempt to furnish you with all the skills necessary to do well in your exams in as few sessions as possible, I will, of course, do my best to help accommodate your requests. (Occasionally people have come to me just weeks before exams, and, although it`s not my preferred style, I can usually put them up a grade or two!) However I prefer to spend a long time making sure that you not only understand the topic you are studying but go away with skills you can use for the rest of your life.
