About Pushpinder

In the capacity of Senior Teacher for English Language and Literature, I rendered my teaching skills to Senior Students preparing for the Board Exams following GCE, GCSE and IB Syllabus. Holding a wealth of thirty-six years of teaching experience, including eight years of dedicated Online tutoring experience,I aim to provide enjoyable and interactive learning in the areas of Language Enhancement and the Understanding of Literary Texts in different genres by different writers. Abundant use of Interactive White Board in the Classrooms, Powerpoint Presentations and Slideshows, in addition to recourse to the use of varied media, has been my forte. I also hold longstanding experience in preparing students for TOEFL, SAT, IELTS, ACT and GMAT ANALYTICAL WRITING assessments. Skilled at training students for Dramatics, Inter-School Debates and Poetry Writing Competitions, I specialise in offering my expertise to improve writing and oral skills. Above all, my prime aim is to encourage the students to feel passionate about the subjects and to rekindle in them the genuine desire to learn.

I worked for 16 years, formally, teaching in the best Convent School in Dubai and for 20 years as self-employed- teaching the Edexcel GCSE Syllabus at the O Levels, AS LEVELS, and A-LEVELS. I have been a full-time Online Tutor for 8 years. I specialise in GCSE, IGCSE, AQA, OCR, IB, CIE, ICSE, CBSE ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE obtaining excellent results achieved through proficient follow-up of the Coursework and Projects. I enjoyed an outstanding and easy accessibility with all my students. In the initial years of my teaching career, there was not much usage of software in classroom teaching at that time, the solely direct interaction between the Teacher and the students, cultivated a special rapport. In addition to imparting justice to all the essentials of the Language counterparts of the syllabus, equal justice was meted out in the field of Literature in relation to all different genres and forms of writing.

I have worked in Saint Mary's Catholic High School Dubai, and Dubai Gems Private School, covering a period of 17 years. I have taught GCSE English Literature and Language, and my average A*/A grade proportion of students has been 70% of the class. Although the schools are not based in the UK, we follow the Edexcel board and have adopted the same teaching methods.

Alongside the changing trends in Teaching, I acquired all the skills to provide VAK learning, comprising all forms of interactive teaching for the comprehensive acquisition of knowledge by the students, in addition to developing a genuine interest in the subjects.

Online teaching is an excellent means of interactive learning at a minimal cost and expenditure of time, energy and money. Personalised Notes, Powerpoint Presentations, Videos, Mind-Maps, and Formulas, specially created for Language and Literature Analysis are my forte.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and private tutoring?

My passion for the chosen field goes back ever since I started my career 36 years ago, having engaged in teaching board examination students, guiding and preparing them for their final exam preparation. I have led the students to work up to their best potential. My interest as an online tutor started 8 years ago.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, and the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach both Language and Literature, I like to discuss any and every topic with the students. In Language the area of my focus starts with a focus on vocabulary, and effective sentence construction using different sentence openers which I feel gears the students to frame a good paragraph, leading them to write impactful descriptive pieces and narrative writing. In Literature, my motto is to inspire the students to read every literary text in a manner that generates genuine interest in the writing as well as the writer. I am equally interested in teaching poetry, drama, novels and short stories. I take it as a challenge to discuss all types of topics involved in any given syllabus.
  • Did you have any role models; or a teacher that inspired you?

My mother has been my role model; she was a great teacher, who was self-taught and some of the principles that I learnt from her are followed by me as golden rules in teaching, for instance, "if you have solved 10 past papers there is no way you will not perform well!"
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

To be a good tutor it is most important to relate to the teaching lesson from the student's perspective rather than expecting them to come up to our level. A good tutor needs to tune himself/ herself to the student's level, requirements, understanding and expectations. A tutor needs to be compassionate, patient, and encouraging, having a sense of humour to lighten up the atmosphere. To light up the class with a smile is an important asset for a tutor. A positive outcome of a lesson delivered by a good tutor represents an encouraging performance by the student in which his or her originality and enthusiasm are given expression.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

After taking some gap in my teaching career, it was a great challenge to mould myself to the ongoing teaching expectations when in the light of the projectors and whiteboards provided in the classrooms under the provision of virtual reality lessons, it was a challenging learning task to deliver myself to the new expectations. The whiteboard school scenario was a lot different from the chalk writing on the blackboard or the marker writing on the whiteboard. Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable and interactive experience taking the help of students during break time to monitor and enhance my skills at teaching in the class using electronic devices. For instance, the task of scrolling up and down the screen would become a matter of laughter in which I would heartily join myself. It has been an amazing journey as I stand today looking at myself as an amazing combination of the old and the new systems of learning!
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

The beauty of teaching my subject is that it brings in new challenges daily; every new poem, new novel or drama, a new writing task whether it is narrative writing, article writing, or any other form of creative writing, is a challenge which is not considered difficult but one which keeps the teacher in me alive, ever-growing and ever desirous of progressing.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

The choice of my subjects, English language and literature is an equally intense passion. I enjoy teaching poetry as much as I enjoy inspiring the students to write their poems. It is as much a passion to discuss the intensity of characterisation in a given drama as it is due to discuss the intricacies of plot development as well as the progression of the themes through a given genre.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions:-P)?

What makes me a Superprof is my undying passion which stands strong today as I stand at the end of my 6th decade in comparison with the point of initiation in my teaching career. What makes me a Superprof is an undying passion to be the torchbearer of learning and sharing knowledge across all barriers, borders and boundaries.
