About Priyal

Being of Indian origin, living in Malawi and attending an international school has allowed me to learn a vast amount about different cultures and languages such as English, Gujarati, Spanish and Chichewa. This has also helped me to enhance myself as a person in my knowledge of culture, the world and to shape my identity.
One reason why I have chosen to study economics in university is that I live in a country in deep poverty, and learning about the riches of other countries around the world has given me an interest in how I can help countries such as Malawi develop into a more financially stable country. I enjoy gaining knowledge in these matters due to my inquisitive nature and follow the news of the economic turmoil in Malawi.
I chose to take Economics as a subject during my International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma because of my interest in macroeconomics, economic growth and sustainable development in countries, financial and monetary crises, and international trade and aid to poorer countries. I believe that in taking Economics in university as well, I can enhance my knowledge to an extent where I can one day help address the issues I have mentioned above.
Living in Malawi, I try my best to help out the less fortunate. For example, in the first year of IB, my classmates and I went to a small village called Luwawa in Malawi and helped paint a hospital for the local community. My family and I also visit an orphanage where we donate clothes and stationery equipment for the children and it is plain to me that much more could be done than simply donating. With a degree in Economics, I could truly help people in Malawi who are not as privileged as others.
Being in an international school and studying IB has helped me become a more rounded student, by allowing me to take a wide variety of subjects and also engage in extracurricular activities with the Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) program. As part of CAS, I participated in sporting activities such as tennis, cricket and fitness training which were challenging, but gave me an incentive to always persevere. The two activities that took the most dedication were organizing the senior year prom and being part of the school student council. I was elected as leader of the prom committee as I have a reputation of being disciplined and cooperative, meaning I had to plan and organize the committee’s events to raised funds for the prom. Being a leader of the prom committee not only strengthened my communication skills, but most importantly, increased and further developed my leadership skills.
With my persistent commitment to school work and extracurricular activities, I see myself as a hard- working and dedicated student. This has been borne out by my achievements in and out of school. Recently, I achieved the award for the Head teachers’ Honor Roll. One of my memorable sporting achievements is representing the school’s cricket team as a captain and becoming the Inter-School Cricket Champions of Lilongwe. I also spent some of my time off IB work tutoring IGCSE students with their physics coursework and assignments and I managed an under-18 football team called “Puma Strikers”. These really helped me develop my collaborating skills and allowed me to help people with their academics and sports, something which made me feel proud after seeing them improve, which was regarded as an achievement for me. I feel proud and privileged to be able to pass on my knowledge to the young.
Whether it is the friendly environment of Malawi or my culture, I have always been an individual who never likes to sit around at home and this is why during my free time I like to socialize with my friends and family, whether it be through playing sports or just meeting them somewhere in the park and having a little laugh. I see myself as an active, engaging and hardworking member of a community, no matter the environment.
