About Priscilla
I'm a novelist and Cambridge graduate with an MA with Distinction and a PhD in Creative Writing from the University of East Anglia. I'm a highly-experienced, supportive, conscientious teacher who specialises in Creative Writing, Academic Essay Writing, the English Language and English Literature. Currently, I teach creative writing evening classes at Kingston University and Lauderdale House, Highgate, and academic writing skills to law students at City University.
I've tutored for well over 2,000 hours during my teaching career and have two teaching qualifications. Recently, I Skype-tutored a girl weekly for two years for her Creative Writing A-Level. I was her sole teacher for this subject. During the first year she wrote a wonderful young adult science fiction novel. She received an A.
I love teaching creative writing – to whatever age, from complete beginner to those who are working on the first draft of their novel and need some help. My students find my approach inspiring, positive, warm and diligent. I believe anyone can write – and write well – given the correct support and guidance. It's a real joy when novice writers discover their voice and complete a piece of fiction for the first time. My specialism is prose (short stories, novels, memoirs) though I'm happy to teach poetry and script writing too. I have taught creative writing since 2012 at the University of East Anglia and evening courses at Kingston University (where I currently teach). I’ve judged a short story prize. I’m currently redrafting my first novel under the guidance of my agent.
I also have substantial experience teaching academic English: how to structure and write a well-referenced essay in any subject using the correct grammar, vocabulary and punctuation. I’ve taught these skills at several UK universities since 2005 and have marked undergraduate and postgraduate essays in most disciplines. If you or your child would like help with how to write a good essay for either coursework or exams, I am very good at explaining the process from analyzing the question to drafting to proofreading very clearly and have many practice exercises and models to offer.
The majority of my teaching experience has been classroom-based and at university level, so I know the UK university system very well and am able to give admissions advice and help with personal statements. I’ve taught at Kingston, UEA, UCL, City, Sussex and Bath.
Having invigilated and marked many exams, and having been a high-achieving pupil myself who knew that exam success is largely to do with advance preparation and clear-headed strategy on the day, I’m strong on advising on exam technique and helping you or your child achieve your or their goals.
I can clearly explain rules and give plenty of practice exercises for those who struggle with grammar, punctuation, sentence or paragraph structure. I started my career in 1996, teaching English as a foreign language and so know the English language, its marvellous, rich vocabulary and slippery grammar rules inside out.
Finally, I'm passionate about reading and love teaching English literature. I taught undergraduates twentieth-century literature for three years (2012-2015) at the University of East Anglia, so I’m well placed to teach your child A-Level English Literature A-Level. I’m great at engaging most people with difficult or at-first-glance-unappealing texts and will be able to help with producing well-written coursework and give exam practice.
I love reading (of course), cooking, yoga, skiing, walking and dancing.
Tutorials
Over the twenty years I’ve been a teacher, I’ve honed a student-centred approach – I listen to and diagnose you or your child's needs and develop my materials and teaching style accordingly. Each class is bespoke. I have a wealth of texts, online resources and exercises to draw on in the areas of Creative Writing, Academic Writing, Grammar, and Literature.
I live on the edge of Hampstead Heath and am happy to teach at my home, travel to yours, or offer Skype tutoring. I’ll be happy to discuss a discount for local students and online tuition.
I generally set a good amount of homework and will mark and annotate this at no extra cost. I tend to critique creative writing in quite some depth, which students tell me they find extremely useful and encouraging.
Please drop me a line if you’d like to discuss your child’s needs or your own. Also, please get in touch if you don't see availability for the time you want – there may well be other slots available. Looking forward to hearing from you!

If you want to learn how to write creatively I can highly recommend her course. I always wanted to write a novel and now, thanks to Priscilla, I am.Priscilla first taught me when I was engaged in my MA in Creative Writing at Kingston University - her masterclasses were focused, inspiring - and enjoyable! So much so that since completing my MA I have continued to attend her workshops.

Priscilla is an amazing teacher. She is patient, kind and helps every single person in her classes. She doesn’t discriminate and loves her students.
I first started Priscilla's Creative Writers for Improvers course at Kingston University after finding it online in 2016. Since then I've taken her class several times, and each time I have found it incredibly valuable, with the course being dynamic and wide ranging, and her feedback on my writing insightful and extremely helpful. Since starting, my writing has massively and markedly improved.
I have just completed a ten week course. I had no previous experience. The topics covered were comprehensive and practical. References used were interesting and wide. Exercises useful, long piece and workshop crit excellent. Excellent tutor for all levels, empathetic, practical and interesting.
