About Pola
I am a language and linguistics graduate from University College London
(UCL). I have recently completed my Master's Degree in Linguistics, having previously studied Russian and Eastern European Languages for my Bachelors Degree.
I am proficient in five languages and I speak them all to a different degree.
I am fluent in Polish, English, and Russian. I also speak Portuguese at a B2 level, and Spanish at a B1 level. I am always improving my knowledge and ability in these languages. I have experience studying and learning over a dozen languages over the last 6 years giving me a wealth of experience in linguistics. Languages are my passion, and I am eager to share my passion with all my students.
I am originally from Warsaw, Poland - and I am proud to call that my home. However, besides Poland, I have grown up and lived in 4 other countries: United States, United Kingdom, Russia, and Hungary. Living in different countries outside of my own has given me exposure to many different cultures and languages at a very young age. I became fond of languages, meeting new people and embracing the culture and its traditions wherever I went. I am very open to new experiences, and I am very enthusiastic about learning. This is something I like to instil in my students while teaching. It is important to learn not only the language but to expose yourself to its culture and integrate into the community. In my lessons, I aim to incorporate aspects of history and culture into language learning.
Teaching Experience:
Over the last 6 years, since I entered Higher Education, I have been teaching students of different ages and levels. I have taught for two separate curriculums: Polish and UK. Despite living in the UK, I have completed my formal Polish Education, which means I am familiar with the Polish curriculum. Having completed my GCSE's and A-Levels in the UK, I am also very familiar with the British curriculum, and the exam boards.
I have experience teaching online, and in-person, as well as teaching single students, small and large groups. Through my hard academic work, and dedication to my university, I was chosen to participate twice in the Global Citizenship Programme at UCL ( a summer school programme at UCL). The programme focuses on Europe across a variety of perspectives – from history to politics, culture to linguistics and many more. I taught and lead a large group of first-year students, ran their seminar sessions, and assisted with their language learning.
While living in Russia I taught English to children ages 6-12, and 13-15. I had several one-to-one students, however, I also have experience teaching large groups. I was hired to work for a Russian Language Summer Camp outside of Moscow. Not only was I the main language teacher, but I also assisted with creating lesson plans, organizing tests and actives, training other language teachers, and more. I was able to motivate my students to do well and work hard. I was passionate about teaching, and working with children, and I think that my passion rubbed off on them when I was teaching them English.
Teaching Method:
I have had many experiences with different language teaching methods through attending courses, shadowing other language teachers, and running my own classes.
My teaching method is simple. I aim to instil confidence in my students. From the first day of teaching, the student needs to actively take part in speaking the language. I will be working hard to improve their memory and confidence through numerous speaking activities. I have a great passion for languages and linguistics, and I want to encourage my students to be passionate about their learning and confident when speaking to native speakers.
I aim to adapt my teaching method depending on the age, schedule, past experience and language level of the student. In the past I have always planned the lessons myself ( depending on the student's needs), however, I am open to following the student's vision and allowing them to set the pace of the lesson themselves. For children and teenagers, I have a lot of teaching methods up my sleeve that help the student remain concentrated, excited and interested throughout the lesson. I am very patient, as I know how long and dwelling language learning can be. That is why I aim to make it as fun and relaxing as I can. For adult learners, I will hear out their needs and set a lesson plan based on that. Whether you are learning a language for love, business, travel or for educational purposes - I am there to help.
I aim to do my job to the best of my ability. I accept feedback and I am always looking to grow and develop as a teacher. I understand every student's situation is different and that is something I take into account. I am confident I will be able to help all my students, no matter what age, achieve their targets.
I am happy to set homework, help the student study for exam revision, study for higher language examinations, university, produce essays, as well as help the student with self-learning when I am not available.
Work:
Besides tutoring, am a freelance writer, and translator. I have experience developing and writing web content covering various topics, in many forms such as articles, fact sheets, blogs, short stories, courses and more. I have experience in translating between all of my languages, however, I mostly work between English, Polish and Russian. I have translated political, economic, and educational pieces, as well as lighter blog posts, stories, and essays. I also work as a fact-checker and proofreader - ensuring that all the content I produce is flawless.
