About Pierre

GCSE Specialist - Professional online tutor - PhD/MSc holder

I am a full-time independent tutor who specialises in online GCSE tutoring. My mission is to empower students, boost their confidence, and get them the best preparation possible for their exams.

I am a bilingual French native with a broad academic background, strong international exposure, and a passion for tutoring. My approach comes from this passion: more than just teaching, I strive to spark the interest of my students, give them broader context and meaning, and intensive/specific preparation so that their attitude towards upcoming exams is optimal.

Getting A* or grade 9 is not a fantasy that is only achievable for the geniuses or the "elite".
I show my students that it is achievable and within reach: and they do get exceptional results (average of grade 8/9 at GCSEs '17).

Teaching / Tutoring Experience:
I have been tutoring in the UK since 2016, and in France since 2011, in the following subjects: French (Primary, GCSE, adult learners), Maths, Physics, Chemistry (Year 7/9, GCSE and A-level).
I have taught 2500+ hours, both face-to-face and online.

- Provided French high-school students with tailored advice and specific training in order to prepare their Baccalaureate, in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry (A-level equivalent)
- Helped adults wanting to travel the world improve their written and spoken English skills, and overcome foreign language anxiety
- Trained teenage students for the French National Diploma (Brevet des Collèges, GCSE equivalent)
- UCL Postgraduate Teaching Assistant in 2015 and 2016, which included supervising Mathematics tutorial classes, revisions and exam, marking exams, and providing students feedback
- Chemistry Laboratory Demonstrator at Western Sydney University, Australia; guided and co-supervised undergraduate students during chemistry hands-on experimental sessions, and marked reports and exams; supervised Honours Student project.

About me and my approach
I believe that 1-on-1 tutoring (or teaching tiny groups) is the best approach in order to help students reach their potential. In my experience, you can achieve more progress in a few hours than in a whole term of regular classroom attendance. The key point is adaptability. A great tutor is able to motivate students by directly relating to them, and strives to promote critical and creative thinking. He grabs their attention, to show them that the subjects being presented are more than empty diagrams surrounded by walls of text. Personally, during my curriculum, very few teachers have managed to truly spark my interest. But the ones who succeeded have had a tremendous impact on how I now see the world, and how I approach teaching and learning.

For me tutoring, be it in Maths, Physics, Chemistry, French, or even English, is truly a mutually beneficial experience. I find it so fun and rewarding! Being a very curious person, I frequently find myself learning about seemingly unrelated topics. And most importantly, I can’t help communicating my enthusiasm for those topics. I love introducing new ideas to people, or guiding them towards alternative ways of understanding concepts they might already be familiar with, by shifting perspectives. A particularly efficient method to build self-confidence consists in showing students that sometimes, they already know answers to their own questions –although they might not be aware of it!

Please don't hesitate to get in touch, for any additional question or information!

Fantastic French tutor

Written by Jenny B
Pierre has helped me improve my conversational skills substantially. I found it very valuable to learn everyday words and phrases directly from a French native. He taught me the best words to use depending on the context, and the simplest ways to be understood. He also helped me with grammar which was my weak point, and pronunciation.
I really recommend Pierre as a tutor. He is fun, engaging and competent. He really encouraged me and boosted my confidence.
I can now communicate in French more easily and I've gained much confidence

Reference for Pierre Guiglion

(a) I am supervising First Year university practicals at the University of Western Sydney (now Western Sydney University) since 2010. Pierre was one of my two demonstrators in 2011.
(b) I also supervised in parallel Pierre's Master research project and we supervise together the first research project of an undergraduate research project student.
(c) Pierre is one of the best demonstrators I was lucky too have. He was not just excellent at explaining the chemistry chemistry, he was also very enthousiastic and was outstanding at engaging the students

Great physics tutor

I am very happy with my progress and results. I got very clear explanation and support in all grey areas. Everything was explained in detail. I am very grateful for such a rapid progress as we started our lessons very close to the exams and did not expect such an amazing outcome really. I would also emphasis that Pierre has been great with lessons schedule and tried his best to suit our school timetable. Thank you so much for all fantastic support and great exam results!

Exceptional tutor. My children needed help for their GCSEs, and got excellent results as a result of the tuition (all A stars and 9s). They really liked him and even welcomed the idea of extra tuition. Highly recommended!
