About Pierre

Maths/Physics/Chemistry tutor; French tutor; Chemistry PhD

I am a bilingual French native with a broad academic background, strong international exposure, and a passion for tutoring.

Teaching / Tutoring Experience:
I have been tutoring in the UK since July 2016, in French (Primary, GCSE, adult learners), and Maths/Physics/Chemistry (Year 7/9, GCSE and A-level).
I have taught 300+ hours since then, both face-to-face and online.
- Provided French high-school students with tailored advice and specific training in order to prepare their Baccalaureate, in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry (A-level equivalent)
- Helped adults wanting to travel the world improve their written and spoken English skills, and overcome foreign language anxiety
- Trained teenage students for the French National Diploma (Brevet des Collèges, GCSE equivalent)
- UCL Postgraduate Teaching Assistant in 2015 and 2016, which included supervising Mathematics tutorial classes, revisions and exam, marking exams, and providing students feedback
- Chemistry Laboratory Demonstrator at Western Sydney University, Australia; guided and co-supervised undergraduate students during chemistry hands-on experimental sessions, and marked reports and exams; supervised Honours Student project.

About me:
I’ve moved to London in late 2012 to start a PhD in Computational Chemistry at UCL. After almost four years of exciting research, I’m about to submit my thesis. Back in France, I had spent one year as a private tutor in Science and English, and here in London, I’ve had amazing teaching opportunities as well, which have made me fall in love with sharing knowledge.

My approach:
I believe that 1-on-1 tutoring (or teaching tiny groups) is the best approach in order to help students reach their potential. In my experience, you can achieve more progress in a few hours than in a whole term of regular classroom attendance. The key point is adaptability. A great tutor is able to motivate students by directly relating to them, and strives to promote critical and creative thinking. He grabs their attention, to show them that the subjects being presented are more than empty diagrams surrounded by walls of text. Personally, during my curriculum, very few teachers have managed to truly spark my interest. But the ones who succeeded have had a tremendous impact on how I now see the world, and how I approach teaching and learning.

For me tutoring, be it in Maths, Physics, Chemistry, French, or even English, is truly a mutually beneficial experience. I find it so fun and rewarding! Being a very curious person, I frequently find myself learning about seemingly unrelated topics. And most importantly, I can’t help communicating my enthusiasm for those topics. I love introducing new ideas to people, or guiding them towards alternative ways of understanding concepts they might already be familiar with, by shifting perspectives. A particularly efficient method to build self-confidence consists in showing students that sometimes, they already know answers to their own questions –although they might not be aware of it!

Fantastic French tutor

Written by Jenny B
Pierre has helped me improve my conversational skills substantially. I found it very valuable to learn everyday words and phrases directly from a French native. He taught me the best words to use depending on the context, and the simplest ways to be understood. He also helped me with grammar which was my weak point, and pronunciation.
I really recommend Pierre as a tutor. He is fun, engaging and competent. He really encouraged me and boosted my confidence.
I can now communicate in French more easily and I've gained much confidence
