I have had the pleasure to work with Dr Paul McCusker, who coached me through a course by one-on-one lessons over a period of 6 months. Right from the start Paul was able to assess my previous level of knowledge and devise a suitable lesson plan accordingly.
Paul's experience as an instructor was clearly evident in his methodology. His instruction was clear, concise and relevant, and he was always patient, reliable and ready to listen and respond to my questions and comments. Each lesson was structured as to address the most important elements of the techniques as well as supporting skills, which allowed me to progress with my overall strategies as the lessons went on. I felt that Paul was able to identify specific that I needed to focus on in order to maximize my own personal potential. Scheduling lessons around my studies and busy work life was easy with Paul, who always showed up on time and knew how to help me fully shift my thoughts to the subject matter.
In addition, Paul helped me by reviewing my academic essays when I mentioned that I was working on them. On several occasions, he provided useful advice on which particular points I should concentrate on in my writing in order to better convey my arguments.
I am thankful to have had such a professional, experienced, inspiring and friendly tutor as Paul. He has my highest recommendation.Paul has been an outstanding teacher. He helped me gain confidence in a topic that I feel I could never truly understand. He brought great resources and gave very sound advice in how to best approach a topic.
Paul has many years' teaching experience and has been very helpful for my son. He sees each tutee as an individual and teaches them accordingly. He is very knowledgeable and supportive and with his charismatic personality I would definitely recommend him.
Paul has been tutoring me biology and chemistry the year prior to my GCSEs. He is very familiar with different exam boards and is able to explain difficult concepts in a way that is much easier to understand. He is also able to adapt his teaching style to different students ; I know this as he also tutors my brother at gcse level. A truly fantastic tutor .
Paul is a superb tutor who knows the subject matter in great depth and is very talented at explaining the unexplainable. He understands each child’s individual needs and capabilities and works accordingly!
During this year I had the pleasure of observing and working alongside Paul because he was hired to help with staffing problems within the science department. He was tasked with teaching a year 13 biology class that had been without a permanent teacher for 4 weeks. In spite of this Paul was able to win over the class by demonstrating his subject expertise.
Paul collaborated objects to make it easier for you to wrap your head around the topic. Good teacher at physics.
Paul was able to help my child understand GCSE content for mock exams. Not only does Paul have an excellent subject knowledge, he also knows a lot about the application of science and how science works. Paul is worth every penny.
Excellent tutor who was well received by the students. Paul's confidence and enthusiasm for the subject was a great motivator for the students. His excellent subject knowledge and preparation allowed content to be covered quickly and efficiently. The students are now much more confident and prepared for their upcoming mocks and and next year's exams. Will definitely use again for high intensity revision in the future.
Paul’s method of breaking items down to their basic level then building back up was outstanding. He gave my daughter confidence in herself and her understanding of Chemistry. He is extremely patient fun to be with and brilliant at communicating his thoughts.
Paul is an exceptional and caring teacher. We are extremely lucky to have met him and for all the support he has given to our child.
His knowledge know no bounds and his detail to the general well being of our child was exceptional. An excellent tutor.Very professional, he knows his subject matter and how to teach it.Also, he is friendly and enthusiastic, always well presented, punctual and reliable.
I can highly recommend him for maths tutoring.Paul has worked out perfectly for Callum who knows his subject reasonably well but was struggling with revision and exam technique and generally feeling overwhelmed just before the start of his A level exams. Paul has helped him to focus on improving his weaker topics and has been able to structure his revision timetable. . Paul has also helped Callum with his exam technique and given him confidence to be able to answer questions with more assurance and in greater depth. Paul has definitely accelerated Callum's learning development and I am confident that it will help him to get the grades he needs for his first choice university.
Probably best tutor that I have ever had, despite only having Paul for half a year, I feel a lot more confident in both biology and chemistry, anything I don't understand he explains it in easy terms which very few teachers do.
Even if you don't need a tutor he is also great for interview practice, I had no clue what to do during an interview but he went through the toughest questions with me, and helped me get into Queen Mary's for dentistry.Paul is an excellent tutor. He is sensitive and gets to know his student well in order to tailor his lessons and revision techniques. He is quite supportive, flexible and friendly. Within two lessONS, he was able to defeat ne the areas that he needed to work with her and consolidate her knowledge. We recommend him highly and our daughter looks forward to his weekly session
Paul has been a fantastic tutor for my daughter and has been teaching her chemistry as well as biology. Apart from having a wealth of knowledge and an experience in from his teaching career, he makes learning fun and interesting and has an amazing sense of humor. He is sensitive and is understanding towards her. As such I have seen her improve in terms of understanding of topics and exam orientation. Each topic is explained in a simple, concise and straight forward way which has made the subjects clear to understand.
Paul works very hard and takes great efforts on his part and is a dedicated tutor. I would certainly recommend Paul as a tutor for other students.Paul has an extensive and secure knowledge and understanding of his subjects as well as the up to date changes to the national curriculum and exam specification.
He demonstrated the relevant skills and practices needed for a subject to be examined with considerable emphasis on examination techniques and revision methods.
His teaching resources were highly appropriate in that they were differentiated. He provided extension material for enrichment and in many cases these were unique to my son's learning style and requirements.
Paul used appropriate, accessible language and dialogue in order to maintain a suitable learning environment.
He agreed a program of study based on his own assessment of my son, the aspirations of my son as well as my own concerns. He placed the ownership of learning and success on my son!
He was able to adapt his teaching, based on the needs from tuition briefs, assessments and other feedback. Paul was highly reflective in his analysis and fine adjustment of teaching style needed for my son. He used strategies to help him become a more independent and confident learner.
Paul's experience as a classroom teacher showed in his range of different teaching methods, behavioural management and learning theories.
He provided accurate and constructive feedback on my son’s strengths, weaknesses, attainment, progress and areas for development, including action plans for improvement. He reported in a clear and timely manner as agreed.
His assessments were highly professional and constructive. He used valid methods of assessment and ensured I understand the purpose, requirements and processes of the chosen assessment method.
Paul provided tuition in a safe, secure, confident and valued environment. He established a clear framework for discipline during tutoring sessions in order to manage my son's behaviour constructively, promoting his conduct and independence. He happily consulted me on his approach to managing my difficult son. HIs approach to behaviour management of my challenging son was both professional and excellent.
I was very happy with the safeguarding and promotion of the well-being of my son.
Result 4A* in biology, chemistry, physics and maths and a very happy and confident son!Paul Taught Ollie twice and was a fantastic find on this site - he was incredibly passionate about his job and also getting the most out of my son and the session - we will continue using Paul as much as possible - Thank you
Paul is a very professional tutor,he masters his subject, his way of teaching is very impressive and he is passionate about teaching which reflects on his tutees, making the more confident in thier subject.
Paul knows every Chemistry syllabus back to front and can aptly explain even the most difficult scientific concepts; just as importantly, Paul built my confidence which tackled my exam nerves. During my GCSEs Paul has been patient and made sure I fully understood the whole syllabus. Paul adapts his teaching style to every student to ensure they achieve their full potential. I highly recommend Paul!
I did my A levels in 1 year and I was hoping to get into a veterinary university and therefore needed an A in both biology and chemistry.
I was predicted a D for my chemistry and a B for my biology at my 6th form college and after months of tutorials with Paul, I got an A in biology and a B (2 UMS marks off an A) in chemistry at my A level exams and got into the Royal Veterinary College of London.
In my 6th form college, we only got 6 hours of teaching per subject per week and we were expected to learn quite a lot of things on our own at home. I was finding this quite difficult so decided to get a tutor for biology and chemistry.
After trying about 6 tutors, Paul was my last change as I was falling really far behind with my studies. After the first class, I immediately knew he was the right tutor for me as he was able to understand my weaknesses and quickly come up with different ways to teach me these areas. For example, I have a visual memory so he used to explain me things by drawing them out.
We had at least 2 hours classes 2 times a week during the academic year and Paul was always prepared for the classes.
He used to first teach me a chapter, while constantly asking me questions about it to make sure I understand everything and that I can apply my knowledge. Then we would do end of chapter questions about it and discuss the answers and the correct answering and exam techniques. Finally, we would answer past paper questions on the topic and only move on to the next topic when I felt confident enough about it.
The main reason why I think Paul is a great tutor is because even though my science wasn’t really strong and I was struggling, he was always very positive and I didn’t feel judged by any of my mistakes. I felt like I was able to ask him any question without feeling ashamed of the lack of my knowledge and this really helped me with my confidence.
He always used a wide range of resources to get me prepared for any type of question that could come up at my exams.
My chemistry teacher at school was being really demotivational through out the year and this was really bringing my confidence levels really low. However, Paul never let me doubt my self and always kept me motivated and helped me keep pushing forwards with my studies.
At the end of the year, I felt really confident during my exams thanks to all the tutoring from Paul.
I was diagnosed with dyslexia during Christmas and Paul immediately adjusted his way of teaching according to my new special needs. We experimented with different colors to see which ones were sticking better at my memory and continued our tutorials using those colors. He also taught me new ways in which I can make learning easier for my self as well as helping me understand and accept my disability.
He was also really helpful to teach me stress management techniques, which helped me keep calm throughout the school year, especially during exam period.
Paul is a really patient, kind, friendly and carrying person and without all his support I wouldn’t be where I am today. He is definitely a person full of knowledge and he truly cares about his tutees and wants to help them.Paul has been a family tutor for over 10 years now and I can truthfully say that we have had no complaints. As a teacher it shows in his tutoring. He has shown variable teaching styles. He explains complex topics well in much simpler terms that can readily be remembered. He did a great job at directing us through hard questions and explaining many useful exam techniques. most importantly he can relate well to students.
I Paul’s details through a friend at school and knew he was tutoring several people in my year at GCSE. Paul was my GCSE tutor for two years, helping me to achieve AA in Science and then for AS Level and A level.
He was very helpful and patient and very good at breaking down and explaining the subject matter in an easily digestible way ensuring that I was able to follow the topics. He was particularly helpful with coursework and spent a great deal of time supporting me in my studies, even if I became disheartened by not understanding the subject. Paul was excellent at helping to improve my confidence in my studies
Paul has a great deal of teaching experience which clearly shows in his tutoring. He is professional, friendly and very good at explaining the material. He gets on well with his pupils and supports them in their work and through exams. He had an excellent knowledge of the subject and the curriculum and was able to frame things to suit my method of learning
I would highly recommend Paul as a tutor for all agesWe have had numerous tutors to tutor our daughter in A level Biology and A level Chemistry. Some of these tutors were both experienced and very well educated (from some top universities) and some less experienced, but all with impressive profiles. All were unfortunately unable to improve neither my daughter’s confidence nor poor grades as they fell short of that holistic teaching experience needed to deal with someone like my skeptical daughter. Indeed my daughter was very reluctant to have "yet another" tutor as she dismissively put it!
Then we found Paul - to see him in action was a god send, inspiring, enthusiastic, motivating, progressive and encouraging - but more importantly completely both curriculum knowledgeably and effective! He immediately recognised her problems and designed a program of study and lessons plans designed to overcoming these. He used many methods of assessment that made learning for her rewarding! His accurate and manageable feedback, suggestions for further learning, confidence building and dissipation of anxiety were spot on for my daughter! My daughter is exceptionally bright and challenging and can easily manipulate a situation to favour her scenario outcome but even she said she was unable to get a reaction from Paul. He easily and calmly diffused her attempts to manipulate and direct the lessons – and in many occasions with a delightful sense of humour included! Paul was in total control of the lesson on every occasion – but yet sensitive and flexible to her learning style and emotional fluctuations.
Paul’s many hours of tutoring, his massive wealth of experience as a classroom teacher both in delivery of the curriculum and behavioural management, his unquestionably curriculum knowledge both theoretical and practical, his ability to relate to our daughter and manage her anxious personality and somewhat challenging behaviour, his ability to teach in many styles, his marvellous sense of humour, his ability to manage time - and to elucidate complex concepts in very simple language and then it application to solving questions - using simple but highly effective and variable resources was to say the least magical. He used simple kitchen practicals, internet, videos, game play, poetry, singing, evolving question bank to build confidence, music etc to make the lesson dynamic and fun but most importantly effective in their learning outcome and examination application.
His impressive profile is a real reflection of his abilities. If anything his profile is a very modest under representation of what he can actually achieve with a difficult, struggling or low self esteem child.
Paul is an outstanding, honest teacher and a highly superior tutor - and not just a tutor that includes some teaching. It’s his experience that paid off!
Thank you Paul
Neither my daughter nor I will ever forget your professionalismThis is to confirm that Paul has been tutoring my son since end of October 2015, during that time he has proved to be a thoroughly honourable, reliable and responsible tutor.
Paul also taught Biology to my daughter. I have seen several teachers in a couple of countries. He is one of the best. Knowing a subject thoroughly doesn't mean that the person can teach well. Paul is good in the sense that he identifies the learning style and weak points of students and teaches accordingly. He gives clear and to the point answers to questions and repeats the subject calmly in different ways if necessary and builds confidence in the student. He is obviously very experienced with students from different backgrounds and with different capabilities which brings along his resilience in teaching. He also gives clear and short notes on how to answer in the exam according to the requirements of the boards. I would highly recommend him for Chemistry and Biology.
Paul is an extremely experienced tutor who quickly and accurately gives a diagnostic of weaknesses and strengths.
He helped our son plan and take charge of his revision. Not only did he teach him how to solve key problems but motivated him to take charge of his revision schedule.I had Dr McCusker tutor my Son for Both A level Chemistry and A level Biology. My son had a few problems in these subjects. Especially in understanding how to write up practicals and prepare and write up both ISAs and EMPAs for coursework , and how to produce a high quality synoptic essay in biology.
Dr McCusker's experience as a teacher within the classroom shone through. He readily explained both the objectives of all the practicals and how to write up ISAs and prepare him for the EMPAs. Furthermore Dr McCusker broke down exactly the marking criteria needed to get a very good mark in the synoptic essay.
All areas very totally clarified for my son - my son knew exactly what was needed!
I recommend Dr McCuskerPaul has been working with my son since September.
Paul's experience as a teacher is very obvious. The sessions are planned and structured. Paul has a range of material and suggestions to add to the teaching of the topics, such as using internet sources to add another angle to the session. My son finds his varying teaching techniques helpful especially when covering more difficult topics. Paul has already identified my son's weakest areas, guiding him to experiment with different approaches to improve his exam answers and revision techniques.Paul has tutored my daughter for GCSE science (+ maths) and for A level chemistry. Paul is a very experienced teacher, who knows the syllabus and how to get the marks very well. Importantly, Paul was able to help my daughter to believe in her own ability which had a significant effect on her exam results. I am very happy to recommend Paul.
Paul gave me the confidence and help I needed to do well in my exams. I went from a B at AS to an A* at A level! Paul is really good at explaining difficult concepts by using different techniques to suit your style of learning. I would thoroughly recommend him as a tutor.
Paul undertook regular weekly tutorials with my daughter who at that time was taking Biology AS and A2. He was focused. He knew the curriculum and the changes in the examination requirements very well. He had an exceptional skill at assessing the strengths and the weaknesses in a child's understanding of the subject matter. He was flexible giving additional tutorials before the examination. Paul assisted my daughter in developing study skills and most importantly, confidence in her ability to successfully navigate this subject
Paul McCusker is an outstanding science and maths tutor who is extremely talented at getting the best out of his pupils. The grades of all the students he has tutored have improved to an impressive degree. Paul brings with him a weatlh of experience, a strong and inspiring personality, and the ability to get the most out of all he teaches.
I have know Paul for over 6 years and found him to be highly experienced in his field of tutoring/teaching. He is very professional, yet friendly in his approach. He is able to identify students' strengths, weaknesses and learning style swiftly, to advise and implement the most appropriate mode of teaching that is best tailored to the individual student. By using this technique, he was a superb tutor for my daughter; I would recommend him to any parent/s or student that is serious about their academic progression.
