About Paul
Hello, my name is Paul and I am an online tutor of Philosophy, English Lit and Religious Studies. I am looking for interested students who have a spark of learning inside them that want to be introduced to some of the big ideas about philosophy, literature and religion.
Perhaps you have always had an itch to study a little philosophy, to see what the fuss is all about. Maybe you have some ideas about what the universe is made of, or what consciousness is, whether animals have minds and what that means for our treatment of them. Or perhaps you don't quite get Shakespeare, or poetry, how the buddha discovered enlightenment or what Jesus was trying to say at the Sermon on the Mount. Well I am here to help you open these ideas up so that you can get inside them and work out what you actually think about them. You don't need a background, you don't need to already be well versed. Whether you are an A-level student encountering these texts and topics for the first time, just starting an undergraduate course, revising to pass some exams, or just bitten by curiosity, then I can help you. The only thing you need to bring is a pencil, a notepad and your curiosity, I can supply the rest.
While I am quite new to this (concealed information), over the past five years I have been building a level of experience tutoring in Philosophy, Religious Studies and English Literature, as well as teaching English as a second language in various academies around the city of Madrid. Over this period I have learnt a wide variety of teaching methods and techniques as well as gaining a sensitivity for the individual needs of each student.
My preferred method for the one-on-one teaching of my chosen subjects is the Socratic style. Rather than me simply explaining an hour's worth of information at the student, we take a question, or a thought experiment designed to raise an important issue, and we think our way through it. I ask questions designed to probe the student's convictions and then we put them under evaluation using critical thinking skills. The two most significant benefits of this method are that
1) the student is active throughout the process rather than passive, so that the content actually sticks and is understood, and
2) it exercises the exact skills required by essay writing at GCSE, A-Level and beyond.
These are the topics in which I specialise. Any course of lessons is in the hands of the student and their needs. I can recommend directions in which to go, but our direction will be led by your own interests:
-History of Western Philosophy from Ancient Greece to the Present Day.
-Ethics and modern day problems of value
-Metaphysics and the problem of the self
-Epistemology and the challenge of scepticism.
-Introduction to Critical Thinking and Argumentative Logic.
-Essay writing and self-evaluation.
-English Literature and Poetry from Chaucer to the present day.
-Topics in the history of Christianity and Buddhism
So, when you hire me as a tutor you are not just hiring someone with the background and the skills to teach these topics well, but also someone who intensely values the educational process. On one hand, it is a road to academic success and successes beyond, but more importantly it is a process of pursuing one's curiosity and developing one's mind enough to reveal the complexity and beauty of the world. As W B Yeats once wrote, "Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire." The light of that fire is what sustains us and lights up the world.

Paul Crowther has worked at The English Academy in Madrid since September 2019. From the beginning he has demonstrated great skill and initiative in organising and preparing his classes. This includes preparation of materials for classes based on the needs of the students, assessment of student progress, revision of textbooks and student placement. As well as this he established an excellent rapport with the other staff members creating a comfortable working environment.
Paul works with students of all ages and abilities, however his motivation and enthusiasm for teaching teenagers and adults has proved to be his strongest asset. His thorough knowledge of grammar has been essential in teaching teenagers and adults at higher levels. His classes are well-prepared and enjoyable, thus facilitating learning through quality teaching.
Paul seems to have very clear that if you want students to progress, they need to learn actively and in contexts they can relate to. He has proved in his time here that he has the knowledge, experience and ability to transmit this to the students and get the best out of them.
Paul has eventually become one of the main teachers at The English Academy, organizing materials for other teachers and workshops for students. He also has a lot of experience preparing students for Cambridge ESOL exams.
We hope to continue having Paul as a teacher at The English Academy and have no doubt that he would be an excellent addition to any English department. If you require more details or extra information please do not hesitate to call me on 653061209 or email me at englishacademymadrid@gmail.com

Carolina Caparrós Torres
DirectorI am happy to submit a reference for Paul Crowther. I am a retired teacher from The Castle School in Thornbury, Bristol, UK, where I taught English. Paul was one of my students for English Literature A level; he also studied Religious Studies (Philosophy) and Music at A level. He was a very good student achieving an A* grade in English and, I believe, an A in Music and B in Religious Studies. He was also very active in the school music activities as an accomplished pianist as well as playing several other musical instruments. After leaving Castle School he went to York University where he studied for a degree in Philosophy. Later he attended Warwick University to study for a Master's degree in Philosophy. Since leaving Warwick, Paul has worked in a number of contexts, including most recently several years teaching English in Madrid.
Paul is a very pleasant and personable young man, hard-working, conscientious and thoughtful, as well as being an accomplished musician. I commend him to you.View more recommendations
