About Oscar
[I'm also more than thrilled to work with students over Skype no matter their location, at reduced rates!]
Hello! The world is full of so many astonishing things, and these things connect to one another in beautiful patterns, many of which we lump together (not without reason!) and collectively term 'mathematics'. I love learning (that is, I love ferreting out these patterns), and I love introducing others to the joy of discovery! Unfortunately, sometimes these patterns require the use of some fairly tricky tools to decipher—but I love helping people understand how to use these tools, too! I've been tutoring over Skype for hundreds of hours over the past six years, working with students from the USA, Canada, Australia, and Singapore. I've also spent dozens of hours helping A-Level and GCSE students with their maths in person.
I spent two years concentrating in mathematics at Princeton University before moving my degree focus to the history of mathematics; on my way to uni, I earnt A grades in Maths, Further Maths, and Physics. (A* grades were not yet awarded at A-Level.) During my A-Level studies, I spent two months living with and being mentored by John Horton Conway, with whom I worked on a (sadly unpublished) paper comprising certain properties of André numbers and a new proof of the von Staudt–Clausen theorem. I have plenty of other interests, including my recent masters in theological ethics, but my love of mathematics remains strong, as does my desire to see that love awakened in struggling students, no matter their ability!
I try to adjust lesson structure according to what works best for the tutee. Usually, though, I help the student to understand the concepts at hand by Socratic reasoning (asking them leading questions until they come to the principles behind the concept), which not only helps to cement the answer better in their memory but also increases their understanding of the mysterious patterns at work in mathematics. The more they realise the patterns at play, the more mathematics is transformed from a subject of rote memorisation into an art they can practise and play around with (and even find fun!). I have the patience and enthusiasm to stick with the student through the line of reasoning, and at every step I want to affirm them, rather than reinforce any negative connotations they have with studying the subject.
I'm also more than happy to tutor gifted & talented young students with an interest in mathematics. I know that such students very often don't get the opportunities they need to be stretched and to develop their abilities, and consequently lose interest in subjects at which they excel. These students tend to work very well with Socratic teaching methods, often leapfrogging several steps ahead and suddenly happening upon a particularly beautiful mathematical pattern. Having access to tutoring of this sort was an immense privilege for me when I was young; I want very much to pay it forward to any other children with an ear (so to speak) for mathematics but no space in which to practise it.

I had trouble with my history teacher and was struggling with the subject.
Oscar took the time to teach me over Skype all the way from the UK. Oscar
was patient, he led me to conclusions instead of just telling me so I was
able to really understand what I was learning. Oscar is so knowledgable but
didn't belittle me at all, he helped me reach a point where I was confident
on the subject which I didn't think would be possible.Oscar explained mathematical concepts in a calm and helpful
manner and in a way that helped me to understand the ideas. He showed great patience going over things until I understood them. He was also diligent and punctual. I was so grateful for his help as I believe my original maths teaching had been very poor. I highly recommend Oscar as a tutor.I run a program providing guardianship for UK overseas students, as well as finding host families for them during their exeat weekends. Oscar is a member of a former such host family, and while hosting students has also assisted in their tutoring, employed by my program. Most significantly, he tutored a 13-year-old Thai student in mathematics, physics, EFL, and WWI-era history for two hours per day during a long Easter break, mostly in preparation for exams taking place the following week. Oscar was very patient in overcoming the second-language barrier and both creative and persistent in making sure the (occasionally excitable and distractible) student kept on track. The student, kept interested by the shifting methods of teaching (and at times just by firmness), solidified his understanding and memory of all subjects studied, and even began to enjoy the work, saying Oscar was the best tutor he’d ever had.
I have entrusted the tutoring of my twin daughters to Oscar. He has added greatly, not only to their education but also to their confidence, with his tutoring. Both girls look forward to spending time with Oscar and are sometimes unaware that he is schooling them as they have the best time while learning. Their confidence has grown, and they feel better and they actually enjoy math because of Oscar. He has a wonderful, understanding, encouraging way with everyone he meets including myself and is very knowledgeable, on many subjects. Oscar is a gifted teacher, and extremely patient, believing the best and inspiring us all to do better and enjoy the process of learning something new and challenging. He is more than capable of handling any situation with thoughtfulness, maturity and dedication.
