About Ollie

Hello! After studying maths at university, I qualified as a maths teacher and I’ve been teaching in schools/tutoring privately for over 10 years now. As a private maths tutor, I always aim to offer a far more professional, dependable and thorough service than is usually otherwise available.

I’d be very keen to have an initial meeting with you (completely free of charge and no obligation whatsoever). You can then tell me what you’re looking for in terms of tuition. I’ll explain exactly how I can help and I’ll happily answer any questions you might have. I’ll also gladly provide you with proof of my qualifications, an enhanced up-to-date DBS criminal record check and references from former employers/clients. Below is a summary of my qualifications/career up to now. Please feel free to contact me anytime and I’ll get straight back to you without delay...

• As a student, I sat Maths GCSE a year early and achieved an A*. I then went on to study Additional Maths GCSE, Maths A Level and Further Maths A Level before studying Maths at university.

• I won the top award (gold award) from the UK Mathematics Trust in both the Intermediate and Senior UK Maths Challenges, both of which I sat a year early.

• I was awarded a place in the Gifted and Talented Academy (University of Warwick) based on my mathematical ability.

• I completed the Graduate Teacher Programme for which I achieved the highest grade of 'outstanding' for my final overall grading. I’ve since taught maths in 2 secondary schools, both of which rated as ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted.

• I was appointed as a Key Stage 2 Transition Coordinator - a role in which I set up and helped deliver a maths booster programme that raised attainment significantly across 6 primary schools.

• I've delivered over 3000 hours of private tuition to date which has included helping students successfully obtain places at Russell Group universities including both Oxford and Cambridge. I've also tutored graduates and successfully helped them score highly in the GRE and GMAT exams as part of their MBA/PhD application process to Ivy League universities including Harvard.

• With respect to the 11 Plus and entrance exams, I’ve helped students successfully obtain places at high-ranking selective secondary schools (Graveney / Tiffin / Wallington / Wilson's / Sutton Grammar / St Paul's Boys' / St Paul's Girls' / Alleyn's / Dulwich College / James Allen's Girls' / St Dunstan’s / Emanuel / King’s / Whitgift / Trinity / Royal Russell / City of London / Streatham & Clapham / Sydenham / Putney / Latymer Grammar / Woodford County / Bancroft’s / Forest / Chigwell). Some of the students I’ve tutored successfully obtained academic scholarships and bursaries because of the exceptional mathematical ability that they were able to demonstrate in both the exam and the interview. The parents of these students have said they're more than happy to provide you with a reference directly.

If there’s anything else you’d like to know at all, please do feel free to ask. Hope to hear from you.

Thanks,

Ollie

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I always really enjoyed studying maths as a student myself in school and at university. Once I'd graduated from university, I qualified as a maths teacher so I could help others develop a much better understanding of maths through private tutoring.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I really like showing students how useful maths can be in solving problems that come up in everyday life. I enjoy discussing how best to approach different types of questions in maths and how to apply the most efficient method.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My maths teacher at secondary school really inspired me and he helped me achieve an A* grade in maths GCSE which I sat one year early. I also won a maths competition he put on at school which meant that I got to go and see him being filmed for an episode of the television programme Countdown!
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I think a good tutor should be knowledgeable and confident in their own subject and should have lots of experience of teaching their own subject to a wide range of different ages and abilities. Good tutors should also be supportive, clear and patient in my opinion.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

When I was a student in secondary school, I used what I'd learnt in maths (data handling and statistics) to form predictions of the scores at the forthcoming 2002 Football World Cup. My mathematical approach to predicting turned out to prove pretty accurate!
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

At university, there was one particular piece of coursework which challenged me more than I ever had been challenged in maths up until that point. The level of difficulty discouraged me at first but I persevered and ultimately I managed to succeed. It was a valuable lesson for me - what initially might seem impossible can be achieved with determination!
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I'm always massively passionate about helping students form a plan for how they're going to prepare for an exam. I'm a strong believer that taking a systematic and measured approach to exams is essential in optimising the chances of success.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I'm a fully qualified maths teacher and I have over 10 years of experience of teaching maths in schools.
