About Nicola
Hi! I'm Nicola, a 22-year-old graduate in English Literature from St John's College, Oxford University. I'm currently studying a law conversion postgraduate course in London as I train to be a solicitor.
I am an experienced musician and composer, with a high standard of jazz theory knowledge. I have grade 8 classical piano (merit), having been taught by Marie-Noelle Kendall. My special interest lies in 20th century composers such as Ravel and Debussy, but I have also played works from the Romantic, Classical and Baroque periods. I also play alto saxophone and compose in a range of styles, such as jazz ensemble, film scoring and pop songs. I have worked with musicians and artists including Led Bib, Kit Downes, Pete Churchill, Simon Wallfisch, Sanju Sahai and many others.
I was a member of Aldeburgh Young Musicians from the ages of 14-18, and have performed at events including the London Jazz Festival, the 2012 Olympic Torch Ceremony, and the annual BBC Holocaust Memorial Day service. At university, I was a founding member of Oxford's first and only all-female funk band, Sisters of Funk (Google us!).
I can teach classical piano up to grade 5, saxophone(s) up to grade 5, jazz piano, jazz saxophone, composition and songwriting, arranging, and improvisation. I am also proficient in music software including Logic Pro X and Sibelius, so I can offer help in these areas. I have produced my own songs - you can listen here: (concealed information)/nicola_radford.
I am a friendly, enthusiastic and articulate person, and I enjoy watching films, being in nature, food, and spending time with my friends. I can teach any age, and currently have experience working with students from ages 11 to 63. My teaching approach is modelled on the tuition I received as an Aldeburgh Young Musician. That is to say that I believe music is made up of many cultural and historical factors coming together. I will share all of the knowledge I have about areas from free jazz to film scoring to help students release their creativity and reach unique outcomes. My classical piano teaching focuses on expression through music, and perhaps most importantly, flexibility and relaxation of the wrists whilst focusing energy through the fingertips. My composition teaching depends on what genre the student is interested in, but it is based in sharing the varied methods of approaching a new composition, and looking at relationships between harmony, rhythm, melody and lyrics.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
Nicola is an excellent tutor. She is patient and encouraging, whilst also being incredibly engaging. Her style of teaching is highly interactive, which helps foster a mode of critical thinking which is essential for English at all levels. I would recommend her highly.
I asked Nicky to tutor me once a week with playing the piano. I asked Nicky because I was always inspired by her performances in school, her remarkable talent and passion for music. Which if I’m honest as a young girl showed me there was more to school - about having such a talent which helped me grow as a student in other art subjects. I was given constructive feedback each week and was never made to feel like I wouldn’t succeed. The tutoring included reading sheet music, different music eras, types of notes etc.Nicola was patient with you and non judgmental to my ability and taste of music when I first started.I will always remember her for kindness and willingness to help me grow as a musician.
