About Nick
I have recently been appointed as a sessional lecturer at Brighton Metropolitan College, teaching Foundation and Advanced Diploma levels of photography. I regularly guest lecture at Esher College where I deliver workshops on all technical aspects of photography in accordance with A Level syllabus requirements and provide workshops on fashion and social documentary photography as part of additional learning trips to Paris Photo and Bristol.
My approach to teaching is both critical and reflective, allowing me to continually develop my practice in order to provide an inclusive learning experience in which creative experimentation and individual development at a high level is attainable for all students.
My extensive subject knowledge enables me to successfully contribute to student learning in relation to both commercial and gallery oriented practice, higher education requirements and professional development.
In my role as photography practitioner for the NCS, (National Citizens Service) and one to one mentor for Fresh Start In Education, I have delivered workshops and accompanying educational visits to under achieving students aged between 15 and 19. Utilising photography as a creative tool with which to develop students’ confidence and social skills, I have successfully nurtured a positive approach towards social interaction among students, helping them develop the necessary skills for continued education, career progression, life long learning and leisure.
I have received outstanding feedback for my passion, professional and inspirational approach to my teaching.
Complimenting my teaching qualification is a BA in photography and my subject knowledge is underpinned by extensive professional expertise and understanding gained from a fifteen year career as a portrait and fashion photographer. Having worked commercially and editorially both in the UK and abroad for clients such as Urban Outfitters, Move UK, Phillip Morris and IPC Media, my subject knowledge encompasses all photographic techniques, both analogue and digital. I am technically and creatively proficient in the use of all studio and location lighting systems, from Kino Flo and HMI continuous lighting to ProFoto, Broncolor, Elinchrom and Bowens portable and studio flash. I have fulfilled pre and post-production requirements for clients via Capture One Pro and Photoshop, which I also use in the development and production of my commercial folios.
I have been fortunate to work within collaborative and creative teams at a high level throughout my career, allowing me to continually develop excellent communication, organisational and creative skills, necessary and relevant to both industry and educational practice.
As a result I posses excellent industry links, which I have successfully used to benefit a number of students.
My photography has been exhibited in the UK and in Europe and I continually work on personal projects, which I believe to be a valuable and inspirational educational tool.
